Forgotten WEP Network Key
« on: February 17, 2008, 12:19:05 PM »
I'm not sure if anyone can help me or not, but I figured I'd ask:

I'm dog-siting with my girlfriend and he people's house she's staying with have wireless. They gave her the key and she has it saved to her computer, but she doesn't remember what it is. I'm wondering if you guys know of any way to get that key from her computer so I can get on the network on my laptop as well. I'd just ask the people, but they don't have cell phone service right now (and haven't since last night... LAME).

Thanks in advance.

Wep keys are encrypted.  Technically you can get the wep if you have ALOT of time and s certain wifi network sniffer, but literally you'll need a few months of collected packets to crack the key.

You can crack it, but you need the right programs and a network card that the program can work with.

There is a link on this page that shows how to crack a wep key in 10 minutes with a program called kismac for mac os.

I am not sure of a good wep cracking program for windows.

If you are a fan of linux you can also use a thing called "BackTrack". It is a live cd that you can boot to, and it runs entirely off the cd or you can install it in a dual boot configuration. That thing has nothing but programs to hack all kinds of things. from WEP to WPA, to password cracks. It is just really difficult to use.

I ended up downloading Wireless Key View and that gave me the key for the network :)

You're all overthinking this. It's kind of late now since he's already gotten the key, but if she has the key saved in her computer, all you need to do is reveal from the stored key on her system. A nice little program called Cain and Abel will let you do just that, as well as a lot more. It just takes a couple mouse clicks and you have what you need in a matter of seconds.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Pretty much all wireless routers have at least a few hard-wired ports you could connect to (or just use a computer already connected to it). Going to 192.168.1.1 would most likely have a section to show you the key. Even sully's overthinking this.

Usually, your router will not ave the keys in plain text.  Once you enter it it turns to bullets or stars.  And if your does, I'd get a new router/ap.

And this isn't his router, it's whoever he is house sitting for, so he probably does not have the admin password (if it isn't the factory admin/password).  And if he did, he can just take WEP off or just create a new key.

Yes, you'd need the username/password to get in but most people should know that.  A quick phone call to the owners would take care of it. But, the keys should NOT be in plain text when you login. If they are, how they hell do you get other devices linked to the wireless network without the key?

Do you mean the keys should be in plain text?  I guess they are on some routers, but IMO they should NOT be displayed in PT unless you are just setting them up.
