Title: Comcast dropping mad packets
Post by: Billabond1 on January 17, 2008, 04:48:42 PM
My comcast is acting up real bad.  It is dropping more than 50% of the packets and the internet is extremely slow.  I have tried everything I can think of.  Wondering if any of you guys have run into this.  The guys is coming tomorrow, but I just wanted to see if you guys have any ideas.

Most likely bad levels at the tap. There's not really anything you can do. The tech will take care of it tomorrow though.

Are you talking about your place in Phlly or MechBurg?

If you want to look at your modem levels, open your browser and go to http://192.168.100.1 (http://192.168.100.1). That will take you to the status page of your modem.

Well when I was on Comcast, it ran slow at times. But I don't have to worry about that too much now. Considering I am on FIOS, only had one problem with FIOS though. The box outside went bad, the tech said it just stopped interpreting the signal. He replaced the box and we were back up an running the same day.

This is in philly.  I noticed that the tv in my room was getting a bad signal (cable modem is also my room), but not the tv downstairs in the living room.  Maybe there is a problem with the cable up here?

Anyway, thanks for the response sully.  I will mention to the tech about the levels at the tap.

I'm sure that's one of the standard things they check. He will check at the tap, then move into the house, checking the levels at each split. If the problem is in your room, but not downstairs I would bet that you don't have the wiring inside the house done correctly. You should always have the modem on a "home run", i.e., going back to the cable coming into the house. If it gets split off too many times, the levels will drop below the safe threshold and cause packets to drop, picture to be noisy, etc. But that's all part of basic troubleshooting.

Our house does happen to be wired very poorly.  Lots of splitters everywhere.  The thing that gets me is that it has been like that since we moved in, and we have not had any troubles, great speeds actually.  This just happened all of a sudden.

The guy should be here in like 20 minutes, so we will see.

So well that his tubes are permanently clogged.
