Title: COD4 on Vista
Post by: Petch on June 13, 2008, 04:50:50 PM
Hey Guys,

I don't have a lot of time to look this up tonight and hoped that someone else already figured it out, but how do you run COD4 in Vista without downgrading to DirectX 9.0c?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried disabling the UAC and running it as a administrator? Or am I missing something, that Vista doesn't play DX9 games?

Wow, I think Tibs might have a point for once....

Why would you need to downgrade to get it to run?

I thought DX10 was fully compatible with DX9 functions.

During the install it asked if I wanted to install DirectX 9.0c, I selected no knowing that DirectX 10 was already installed with Vista.  When I go to run COD4 I get an error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

UAC has been disabled since I installed Vista!

Well this is stupid, but I got it working.  I manually downloaded the .dll in question and dropped it into my root COD4 folder and it works fine.

After I started loading it up, I remembered that I forgot to backup my COD4 when I reinstalled.  So I have to start from scratch!

Ohh another thing with vista... It detects plugged in mics. If the mic isn't plugged in it won't start MP for me!

I remember seeing a similar error a while ago.  it had to do with the latest ATI drivers which had some serious bug that prevented any AGP ATI card from playing any 3d stuff.  Vista would say direct x wasn't installed or supported and the 'Wndows Experience Index" would go down to 1.  I think they've finally either resolved it in the latest drivers or have provided a patch.

Just a thought anyway.

Now that is just stupid.

Do you have a soundblaster?  I know cypher doesn't have a mic but he has been able to get into cod4 because it picks up the "what you hear" input device as a mic.

yo cod4 doesn't use DX10.  it's DX9 only and vista should be fine with DX9.

You can change that in the sound area of the control panel.  I had the same problem with CS:S.
