I have a 13 yr old brother in law who is a Fudgetard. There's no polite way to put it. Fudgetard. (no this isnt the bro in law I bring to lans. He's 21). Anywho. His mom..that would by my mom in law, got him a low end dell that her work was getting rid of.
I threw XP on it along with Avast. Mom in law emailed and stated it has a virus on it and that she'd like me to fix it...again. This is the 3rd time in two months I've had to fix this POS. I don't use XP anymore nor is my current set up condusive to hooking up another system for diagnostic and possible re-installation activities. It's a pain in my ass.
What is the best way to lock this sucker down so this dipCrap can't screw it up again? All he does is play WoW on it. Supposedly, he gets these viruses by downloading WoW addons but he's too stupid not to run any .exe files that claim to be addons or whatnot. Thoughts?

13 yr old who plays WoW... well that's just a can of worms right there.
-
I know....
-
I don't believe the WoW addons story... I say you put a Nanny tracker/lockdown on the system and I'll bet he doesnt get anymore viruses.
-
Another thing you could do is use OpenDNS to block porn and other bad sites. The mom in law will probably like that anyway. To fix it remotely you can use Crossloop although someone has to be on the other end to allow you access into the machine.

Could you be specific with recommended programs?

Cut his hands off.
13 yrs old....recurring virus infections....I smell pron....and probably some form of lube. There's no way he's getting these infections from wow addons alone. And correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the addons from Blizzard?
-
Ill check for the programs that I had looked into for my nieces computer and get back to ya.
Also another idea would be to create his account as a USER account and not an ADMIN and dont give him the right to install programs. This would limit some of the garbage getting on the system.

Not all addons no. Actually I think most of them are user-made. WoW addons are basically just lua scripts. Or at least they were last time I played that damn game. I don't see why they couldn't carry malicious thinga-ma-whatsits.

I can just see him going to pick a wow addon and not knowing that theyre just supposed to be scripts and not executibles.. downloading it and running it. Something like that. Of course, I`m sure pr0n plays a roll in there.

I see. Yeah, I guess they could come from user made crap. My money is still on electronic masturbation material.

Windows Steady State http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx)
Its a little tedious getting it set up, but it should do what you need.
Works similar to Deep Freeze if your familiar with that and is free.
-
ooo. Imma try that steady state when I get the comp tomorrow. Good call.
-
OMG, I know what your BC2 sig pic is.....gross.
-
HA! I was waiting to see how long it would take for one of ya to pin point it. Not long at all. 4 hrs?

Windows Steady State sounds like an update to the Policy Editor for Win 98 that was out. I used that a couple of times at my church to restrict the users to certain programs. It was always a pain in the butt to setup.
