Anyone have any experience with DD-WRT?
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:41:01 PM »
I am looking to install this firmware in my WRT54GS router to make it....bettter.  Anyone ever use this?  What was your experience?  Anything I should be wary of - other than the perils of flashing the firmware with a 3rd party FW?

Adding a file/gaming/web hosting server and I NEED more than 10 port range forwarding slots.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

Im running it now, I have it on a WRT350n,WR850 (Surfboard), and WRT54Gv1 all running different versions.

I would wait until v24 final is out in a month or two before jumping to the new FW, the v23 sp3 is pretty decent for standard WRT routers.  The release canadates have some issues and I have a strong fear of bricking my 350n.  Also check out the optiware packages, you can do some cool stuff with it, I'm doing some pretty cool things with my router (Bittorrent, VPN,HTTP/FTP download queue to NAS, etc(.

I'm also running this. Like you said, the scary part is the initial flash from Linksys's FW, but if you follow the steps exactly as they say it should all work out in the end and you will love it! Measure twice, cut once!
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I also have had it running for a while on mine... But I use my pfsense box for the real router, but the WG is still cranking away for wireless.

Flashed and setup already!  As in the not so famous words of Emil Antonowsky after shooting the cobra rifle for the first time(Robocop villian: http://imdb.com/title/tt0093870/ ) " I LIKE IT!!!!"

Ok, I know its a vague reference, but it works.

I actually recommend an alternative to DD-WRT, I am running Tomato v1.14.

Here are some pages that I read before I upgraded.

Well, after seeing what ddwrt can do, any 3rd party FW will be better than Linksys'.  Already I can notice a huge difference in web page load times.  I also upped the max connections to 4096 since I am a torrenter.

Hmm after all this talk maybe I might want to look into this... I wonder if I can make it so my internet doesn't flash whenever I "refresh all" servers in steam :)

highly recommend a hard wire connection and using IE to flash. I have dd-wrt on my linsys 54g and it kicks a** (v23 which is cool cause it allows you to overclock your router...223 baby...LOL)

Just follow the how to and get the right image and you'll be fine. It only takes bout 10 min to do it

Firefox makes me feel safer or you could use tfpt. But definitely wired.

There's actually something on the Wiki about how you can't or shouldn't use FireFox to flash.
