Title: Alternative Firmware for Linksys Routers
Post by: sully! on June 10, 2006, 11:27:12 PM
I've been having to do more frequent maintenance reboots of my Linksys router lately and I've been thinking about trying an alternative firmware for it to see if that helps.

I know tekie has done this with his router. Has anyone else done this and do you have any preferences or suggestions for an alterna-firmware?

The router have is a Linksys WRT54G v.1.1  (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1149562300349&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper) with the most current Linksys firmware.

I'd like to give this a try before I explore replacing the router.

Edit: I'm trying out DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php) and really like it quite a bit so far (ok, it's only been a couple of hours). The website itself isn't much, but the Wiki is quite helpful. I still haven't explored all the features of this firmware as there is so much to it. Has anyone used it? Thoughts? Concerns?

DD-WRT is by far the best one out there now

the sveasoft firmware was good (still is) but they have some shady buisness deals etc, ddwrt is a nicer package, and at least attempts to comply with the GPL

This is apparently based on what Sveasoft started, but they've refined it, added to it, cleaned up the gui, and they don't charge $20/year for it like Sveasoft does.

It's working pretty well so far. I want to figure out the Hotspot config though, basically just for the captive portal aspect. Something just wasn't lining up right earlier. Plus it also looks like I can use the wireless on my router to connect to a neighbors conveniently unsecured router and use it as a secondary WAN connection, but I haven't looked into that very deeply yet. But I think the best thing I've seen so far is the addition of VPN support. I can setup my router as a VPN endpoint, and then get a router for my mom, and have that point back at mine as a client so I can have her PC on my network, helping with support issues, etc. Very cool stuff.

Anyone have a WRT54G they want to sell cheap? Preferably a version 4 of the hardware.

P.S. One more post and I'll be 1337!!!
