RAM or a new video card?

I'm currently running 8gigs of ram and an nVidia GTX770 (2gig).

I was thinking of either going for 16gigs of RAM or a GTX970 (4gig).

Thoughts between the two?

You would probably be better off just getting a 980. Extra Ram is nice to have, I would go more towards better memory speed then quantity.

Don't count out the GTX 970.  Yes there is a lawsuit but it is still an amazing card with a very aggressive price.  The VRAM problem is only an issue if you are gaming at resolutions higher than 1440p.  And at that resolutions you would need an sli setup anyway.

Don't forget, the GTX 970 was at the top of every reviewers list for the best buy for video cards before the negative press.  And those were based on benchmarks and performance.

I have 2 970's in sli and love them.  I game at 1080p and have had no issues.

Basically false advertising.  They said the card had 4gb of VRAM.  It's sort of true.  It has 2 allotments.  One of 3.5gb and one of 500mb.  If more than 3.5 GB are accessed the performance supposedly bogs down as it accesses the other allotment of ram.  It only happens at high resolutions.  I've been monitoring my VRAM and never went above 3.5gb.  And the bog down is more likely in a sli setup.

Yes, but note in the video that the resolutions were all high.  You will have no problems if you're gaming at 1440p or lower.

Also to note is what happens when DirectX 12 comes out especially if you can do an sli setup.  Currently the VRAM on sli does not stack.  So, my 970 setup still only uses 3.5 gigs even though I have 7 GB available.  With DirectX 12 the VRAM on sli setups will STACK.  Which means I will have 7 GB of VRAM.  More than enough.  Star Citizen confirmed they will support DirectX 12.

2 970's is a killer set up for a bargain price.  Way better value than 980's imo.
