Title: Freelancer (the game, not the ship)
Post by: Czar on October 10, 2013, 06:18:43 PM
Freelancer was a Chris Roberts game released in 2003. Star Citizen is considered the sequel to it. Jinu was talking about it at work last night and I grabbed a copy

It -does- have multiplayer and a server can handle up to 128 players. From what I've read, this has many of the qualities that SC is offering. And for 2003, the graphics aren't bad at all.

I'd like to explore getting a server together though there are some rather populated multiplayer servers already out there we can use. Some even encourage roleplay.

Would be nice to get a server going before the November LAN.

Hey guys.  Freelancer was the game that got me into online gaming.  Absolutely loved it!!!  My finest memory was a group of three of us freelancers/pirates holding off a police clan in the Tau-23 system.  3 of us vs 15 of them.  Shady tactics  and teamwork can over power sheer numbers.  Maybe that's why I like BF so much these days :D.

Example of shady tactic:  A gun named Tizona Del Cid does massive shield damage but no hull damage.  Sometimes in battle you can knock of peoples wings, which in turn knocked off their weapons.  If you die w/ out a wing you can respawn, but you lost the gun on that wing.  The Tizona was perfect for this as like I said, it did 0 hull damage so you could shoot @ people nonstop until their wings fall off w/ out killing them.  Leaving them to to respawn with only the purchasable weapons at that particular base.  One of us ran with 5 Tizona's and pretty much made their entire fleet useless :D.

Anyway

They shut down the master server a long time ago. So when you goto multiplayer it wont list any servers.  You will need the Freelancer Mod Manager and the Discovery Mod:

FLMM: http://www.moddb.com/downloads/freelancer-mod-manager-15 (http://www.moddb.com/downloads/freelancer-mod-manager-15) or http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/downloads/freelancer-mod-manager-131 (http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/downloads/freelancer-mod-manager-131)
I don't recall which one I used previously

Discovery Mod details: http://discoverygc.com/forums/portal.php (http://discoverygc.com/forums/portal.php)

Without this you wont get any servers to join.  Keeping in mind that the only servers listed will be "official" Discovery Mod servers.  Its a huge mod adding tons of systems, ships, commodities, planets, etc... to the game.  Its updated fairly frequently.  I tend to come back to this game every couple of years to check it out and Discovery always has new stuff.

Something to keep in mind is that the Discovery Mod servers tend to be pretty heavily RP based and the admins get all pissy if you're in main chat just chatting it up out of character and stuff.  There are also rules about how to engage another player.  I'd read through the rules on the Discovery page.  For instance, as a pirate to rob a convoy you must first take out all the fighters that are accompanying a freighter.

After you load the Discovery Mod and launch the game an absolute must is to get Freelancer Data Storm:

http://ds.fa-matz.de/ (http://ds.fa-matz.de/)

A separate program that will list where everything in the game is.  Extremely helpful.

When you first enter the server (if you choose the official Disvoery RP server) you'll be placed at a planet with a fairly crappy ship.  If you're in a group just go behind the planet and mine (shoot) the floaty things behind it and sell them at the planet.  You guys do this a few times and one of you can probably afford the freighter that is also sold at that planet.  Allowing you to make less trips with a bigger hull.  Which in turns allows you to afford a bigger freighter, and so on...  Once you actually have money the game becomes alot easier.

The game also defaults to a 4:3 resolution due to its age.  I believe there are .ini fixes and Mods that will take care of that.  Cant remember what I did last time.

Thinking about playing with you guys.  This is extremely nostalgic for me.

Krakah, thanks for the info! With all of this I might try to squeeze it into a game night. I'll have to see how much work people are willing to do get into a server, but it would be fun to see what we could do.

A Freelancer scavenger hunt would be a great idea for a game night(s)!

Would be cool to setup a server for it, but that is something I have no info on.

Looks like you may not need the FLMM after all.
