Title: Improving BurningLAN Attendence
Post by: triggerhappy on November 05, 2009, 09:59:33 PM
The BurningLAN staff would like to take suggestions on how to improve the attendance of our events. We currently have a pretty strong following with about 28 or more attendees per event. However, we've had very few attendee's from FITES and we'd like to see more interaction between our two LAN parties.

Currently, some of our staff, myself included plan on attending the FITES monthly LAN to promo our Thanksgiving event. There will be some free admissions handed out to our Thanksgiving event so hopefully this will not only help our attendance but that of FITES as well.

Glad to see you there. Personally I live in Baltimore so it's difficult to travel up that way as much as I do.

Is that purely an issue of convenience? or is it also expense? I recognize that's easily $10+ in gas so would a more conveniently priced LAN entice you ($5-10)?

Not really expense as much as I would love to do this every weekend, I have other obligations and I am sure the wife would eventually leave me if I was gone all the time.

I think its a unique situation here where FITES is the old fogies of LAN parties. While I enjoy the younger crowd (..as in ladies) it may be hard to get the 30+ yr old crowd to come out.

Same here. She's at home with our two year old all day throughout the week so she looks forward to the weekends as her "time off".

Aside from me and Shoctor's personal reasons, one thing you could do is post in our "Other LAN Parties" forums about your LAN's. I don't really think we've heard much from you since our last big LAN. Spreading the word about your events is the most important way to get them to grow. You can't expect people to just find you; it happens, but not enough to make a big impact.

Surely the age difference can be a bit awkward so I entirely understand that. I just think if we could get a solid older crowd of say 10+ individuals, that wouldn't be an issue anymore.

As for the event posting, we haven't had much luck posting in this forum :'(. I honestly think we made a bad impression in our first few events and some people haven't given us a second chance. Our lack of money originally led us to run 60 people off a SOHO router which was awful and our equipment has drastically changed since.

Post that shiz up! Bigger/better stuff should always be announced and pointed out as a selling point for your event.

I don't think it's a question of comfortability in mixing young and old, we're a pretty mixed bunch ourselves. It's just that a lot of our dependable regulars (please, no adult diaper jokes here) have more going on in our lives outside of LANning and we have to squeeze in the time. Five years ago we had LAN's about every 6 weeks almost without fail. But as time has gone by and we try to accommodate the schedules of our staff our "monthlies" have turned into more like "tri-annuals" (3 times a year, excluding our big one). I would have loved to go the GXL last week, but I just couldn't fit it into my schedule. When I was younger and had no responsibilities outside of myself, I even drove to QuakeCon...twice! So again, it's not a factor of lack of desire, it's a factor of life-balance.

Your sales pitch is falling on deaf ears...cause we're old...get it? :naughty:

Hey, I was thinking about coming to one of the Burninglan...lans....to check you guys out.  From the pics it looks as though you have a much younger crowd.  Is there any particular reason as to why you would want an older crowd to come?

Also, if I do come I would like to ask permission to pass out fliers for our 200+ man lan coming up in February....if that's ok with you guys.  Maybe make an announcement or something?

Haha lets not forget that Tibs gets in for free if he brings someone!

I think our staff just had a really good time at FITES this year and enjoyed some of the more serious crowd. We found more people into both case moding and hardware (because they actually have jobs!), better file sharing etc... A lot of the kids at our event are purely gamers and we enjoy a more "nerd-diverse" crowd. Additionally, we're simply not running at capacity at the moment. Our venue and network can handle about 100 people but our turnout seldom exceeds 40.

As for handing out fliers, we'll definitely be at your 200 man LAN. Our staff came last year and all had an amazing time. Most of us are already signed up.
