Title: Oh Snap!
Post by: Jon Horkman on February 07, 2012, 08:30:11 AM
Hey all,

I am an avid gamer looking to meet some local heroes in the area.  I can't believe this community is right here in central PA.  I didn't think anything happened in this crap town LOL.  Anyway I don't have many friends who game or if they do it is spareingly because they are very busy people.  Looking for people to play shooters with and maybe have some mini lans together with etc.  I live in Susquehanna twp right next to Harrisburg.  Look me up on Steam and XBOX.  ID Jon Horkman (the name is a character I played in a movie I did as a kid haha).  I play TF2,
battlefield 3, LFD2 (PC), those are my favs right now, but I'll play anything really, not much of an MMO person, though maybe it's because I don't have a community around for it.

Big ups.  Ben

When Dwg says we play on ton of TF2, he means everyone but him. ;) Though Dwg doesn't lie he loves some BF3.

And if you are holding a minilan you should post it in the "Other LAN Parties" section to let people know. I know many of these guys are close to your area. Also there are some in York, some in Lancaster. There are even some of us in Baltimore and Northern VA. So you will let people from a bunch of areas know. Just make sure you don't let just any yahoo in your home. ;)

Yeah, totally join us on the team speak and gaming on Steam. There's usually a handful online almost every night, and the weekends tend to have a good turn out as well. We're always looking for more people to stack the teams with.

I mean play online with... in the spirit of good competition....

Cool guys, I'll look you up tonight when I get home from work.  Also at the moment I'm attempting to get my mic to work so hopefully I can figure that out as well.  If I get it going, I'll get on teamspeak and see who's running.  Excited to meet some folks!

Well, the Mic report isn't good for now.  Here's the SIT, I use an M-audio 2496 audiophile for my soundcard as I make music on this PC as well, unfortunately it doesn't have a mic output per say, but MIDI and SPDIFs.  I could run a mic thru a mixer or preamp (if I had one) but I don't, and I need those to use a mic.  However, I just bought a USB mic, so theorectically I should be able to bypass my soundcard with this right?  Anyone comment here as I'm not so sure if this will work, but I'm 99% sure it will.

Yeah usually the usb audio device becomes primary.

I was thinking about buying the USB headset, but I don't want to have to wear that thing on my head the whole time I game. I just like having the audio come thru my monitors.  So the next choice is just buying the USB mic (no headset, just a mic).  I should have no trouble hearing people thru the game right, and still be able to communicate when I want to correct?  Sorry if this is newbish, but I honestly have never actually used ventrilo or skype LOL, I have always just gamed alone, and thru text chattng.

That will be all you need, but at the LANs we do ask people to have headphones to keep the noise to a minimum.

You may have to tinker with the placement of the mic and your volume settings so you don't get any feedback.

For lan use, you'll want/need to get a stereo headset w/ microphone. Not only for noise output, but to also clearly hear what your (arguably useful) teammates are saying to you.

If you're worried about comfort, get a set that cover your ears and has some nice padding on them. If you want something that just works, which is the route I followed, you can pick up some practical and cheap behind-the-head logitech thingers. I use my motherboard's onboard audio for teamspeak and have them plugged into that and my actual 5.1 desktop speakers on a separate audio card. Works like a charm and I get all that lovely BF3 surround sound without a hitch.

Well, when the time comes for LAN parties, then I'll squander up some cash for a headset, but for home use, the mic is the ticket.  I added at least 2 of you last night, though I didn't really game at all, got busy with other things.  Though I downloaded the HL2 mod, 'No more room in hell'.  It's basically LFD2 with slower zombies.   Gonna try it out tonight.

Well I'm loooking at my Amazon order now, and it looks like I should be getting my microphone today.  I'll get it setup tonight and hopefully get into a chat with yall.  What's everyone playing tonight?  If it's BF3, I think I need to reload my video card driver, as my game keeps crashing after a couple of rounds.  This game unfortunately isn't the most stable, I've had SO much trouble getting it to run correctly.
