wow...

and actually, most "big" printeres (see 17"+) have huge ink tanks, like 8oz per color, so it wouldn't be that bad

And last time I checked, the proofer at the print shop used those tanks. Each tank was about $400-$800 dollars!  Just cause you have more does not mean it costs or uses less.  Ink is not cheap. I spent over a year doing IT for a printing company that has 4 of these and Two smaller two color presses. Prepress has two Spinjets, and Trendsetters one for plates and one for film. They also have a kodak proofer that I can not find anymore because it was a Creo product.

So, if I am seeing the places where its taped together correctly, we are looking at $10-$20 dollars a sheet because of coverage. This would also depend on the type of paper that was used.  But then again, if you work for a company that does printing you can get away with printing (on the proofer) personal things every once and a while.  If you even think about the press you are insane! To get something on press you better be doing over 100,000 copies.

I was more refering to medium/wide format inkjets, like this:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/WideFormat/WideFormatDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=-11261&category=Wide+Format+Printers

I love being able to use these things at school :D

What model of designjet is that? The Spinjets are just Designjets with a special duplexing unit on them.

We have a KIP 2900 at work.  Will print 3x20 (feet).  It is also laser so the copies aren't quite as expensive but it is only black and white.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

Already have them made up Shado..

Our firm has 3 Xerox 8850 Laser Plotters (black/white) capable of doing 42 inch wide paper.  Has the Color Plotter, 7 Laserjet Printers (black/white), 3 color copiers, 2 b/w copiers, and 3 color inkjet printers.

And this is just our office...

I don't work at the print shop anymore. They place was honestly making me sick. I just wanted to see Tekie prinit it out on his little inky jet and tape it together to be huge. LOL
I figgured you would have the plotters (that aren't really plotters anymore) to do the large format prints.

The reason I say not plotters anymore is because they do raster images. I like the days when a plotter would pickup a pen and draw that color, then go to the next. :)

The old pen plotters were great to watch.  How they would lay down the ink in the order of the drawing.  Do all the verticals on the lettering, then come back for the horizontals.  Was definately cool to watch.
