I'd like to see someone do one that didn't involve a flat panel monitor or a notebook computer (too easy).

I tried it awhile ago on my brothers 17" CRT (it was in a corner) but man its tough. And only works right on apples :D

edit: looking at it closer this one is amazing:

due to the fact there is part of the computer IN the picture

I think that it would be wholey unbeleivable as a CRT. Think about the way the two are made.  If a CRT was "clear" you would have nothing for the CATHODE ray to strike and cause to glow. LCD on the other hand has a backing and CAN be clear. Just I doubt that black is clear.

It would be neat to take the tube out of a CRT, take a photo of the housing, then use that as a background.. would feel liek it was hollow!

I think this one would be the most difficult to pull off technically.

oooho, i figured it out!

He took a picture of his arm/hand... then photoshopped a screenshot of a calculator on top of it...

then.. he took his hand, and pulled the sleeve over it and lined it up with his wrist in the picture... brilliant!

is that a SGI box I see in the backround?

edit: wait thats a VAIO, and you have a lot of stuff in your dock

and this is what I came up with (It is REALLY easy on the laptop if you think about it (I can post the uncropped version [hint] if you don't get it)

Lets see here:

Power
iPod
Card Reader
Mouse
Monitor
Audio Out

It's normally less than that, (just power and audio) but it's been "docked" for the past day getting all teh quakecon pics online, so having an external monitor and mouse is good

Wow, that's pretty cool.  And yeah, would be unbelievable w/ a CRT, but would still be cool.  I had the same thought as you, though Pride, about taking a pic of the inside of it.  If mine weren't so heavy and I weren't too lazy to move it I would give it a try.  Well, not the ins iside thing, just the transparent thing in general.  That pic w/ the hand is awesome, good theory on how he did it Pride.

quoted from the comments for that video:

"They accomplished this by chroma-keying out a solid-color desktop picture (white or light-gray, by the look of the edges around the icons). It's a technique referred to as "blue-screening." The desktop picture was then replaced with a plate-shot of the same camera angle, minus the powerbook."

step1: set up camcorder on tripod
step2: make entire screen of laptop a bright color (green or blue)
step3: film some static image of the desk
setp4: (with camera in same place) move laptop arround (with said above colored screen)
step5: capture footage into your fav video editing app (final cut, premiere, avid, etc) and use the chroma key funtion to replace the empty video (step 3) at 100% with the laptop
step6: profit

if i get bored tonight I might play with it

I might just try this to, but I don't have anything cool to shoot it on. All I have is a corner. Friday night boredom got to love it. Post pictures to see how you made out.

looks half decent, I need another channel of chroma key, as you can see when I go onto dashboard it dims the green (which I didn't realize)

but it still looks cool

and yes, I know my basement is a mess, but it works

I think the key thing you are missing is that the original kept the laptop at rougly the same angle, whereas you are moving it around too much. LCD's will appear to change color at different angles (no matter how good they are) and this could be messing up the chroma keying, along with creating glare at a few points from the lights.

Otherwise, not too shabby.

yeah, i noticed that too, part of it was dashboard dims the rest of the screen

Actually in my opinion, that video was very good. You deserve a cookie.

Anyone else agree that Tekie should do a demonstration of this at the lan?

my transperent monitor, or how to make it?

what would be really cool would be to take a small camera and mount it to the back of your screen and have it do it in realtime

Both, I must say that would be cool to have a camera running full time as the screen. But yes a little of both.
