Title: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: Czar on May 27, 2009, 11:11:22 AM
Woot! Let's do a FITES Internet Scavenger Hunt!

Here's how it works: Use the interwebs to find the answer to the posted question. Once you find it, post it along with the link to the page(s) where you found the info. Then, you post a question for others. Post the questions in Yellow so there's no question as to...er...the question.

I`ll start:

This land-locked nation with a square mileage just under 110000 is surrounded by six countries and was once a colony of a European country.

Negatory.

Armenia has a square mileage of 11,506 and the country in question's is just under 110,000

And I think only 5 countries touch it.

This old game boasted "a first person shooter with six degrees of freedom" (Answers must be in the form of a question).

Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt

Wasn't your turn, but I`ll answer :)

~1299.3 million miles and is dependent on current orbit status.

Now here's mine. Its a little involved.

When the famous leader of The Autobots died, he was reconstructed as __(name)__ and was able to merge with his successor,  ___(name)____. The two of them were able to merge and form ____(name)____. With your answer, post a YouTube video of the merge sequence of these two characters.

Optimus died and was reconstructed as Convoy(?) he merged with Rodimus Prime to create Double Convoy.

Close..but in that clip, they don't physically merge. And as a hint, it doesn't include Rodimus.

I am not sure what name optimus was reconstructed as but was the merge between Hi-Q and Optimus to create Actionmaster Prime(or Powermaster Prime according to other sites)?

No vid but here is ewhre I found this.

Interesting find but that is from a comic. This question involves a TV show and is why you can find the merge sequence on YouTube.

Anywhere from 1299.3 Million Miles to 2266.1 million miles depending on orbits.

Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: sully! on May 28, 2009, 12:55:27 PM
There is a way to get the distance right now at this very moment, not averages, or minimums, or maximums......regardless, I deferred, the topic is now Czar's Transformers question....which is turning out to be a bitch of a scavenger hunt to find the answer ;)
Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: Czar on May 28, 2009, 01:00:30 PM
I`ll give a few hints.

1) Even though there are 3 blanks in the question, once you find one answer they should all be there or very easy to find now that you know what to Google for.

2) There's a couple steps to finding the answer as I didn't want it to be easy as just Google`ing the names involved..or even the TF series in question. Would be too easy that way.

3) I did give decepticon a hint when he PMed asking for clarification on something so I`ll share it with you all. After the Generation 1 TF series ended in the US, it continued in Japan for over 100 episodes. This comes from some of those episodes.
Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: sully! on May 28, 2009, 01:39:43 PM
I'm going to have to give up on this one....wasting too much time reading the (overly) detailed articles on Wikipedia is just confusing me. I've probably come across the answer and just didn't realize it.

My recollection of the Transformers is that they were really cool because they were robots.....that TRANSFORMED! I can't say I ever paid attention to the story. I just liked playing with the toys and destroying things with them (hey, I was a little kid).

Post by: decepticon on May 28, 2009, 07:46:48 PM
Ok, last shot, after this, we should move on.

Not sure what Optimus died and came back as but was the merging between optimus and Ultra Magnus to create Omega Prime (God Fire Convoy).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Prime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Prime)

and

Quote
Prime soon had other things to worry about, as Magnus arrived on Earth with the intention of taking what he believed was rightfully his - by force, if necessary. Severely injuring Prime, who refused to fight back, Magnus tracked him to a desert island, where he pretended to offer him the hand of friendship, only to attempt to absorb the Matrix for himself, forcing the brothers into the combined form of Omega Prime (God Fire Convoy).

Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt

That's what I was thinking, but couldn't find anything that came right out and said that.
Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: Czar on May 28, 2009, 10:03:23 PM
Okay. Let's break this down. First, we need to figure out our Generation 1 Japanese Transformers series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers#Generation_One_.281984.E2.80.931992.29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers#Generation_One_.281984.E2.80.931992.29)

They are: Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, and Zone.

Now, let's find which series contained our Famous Autobot Leader. Headmasters did have Optimus and decepticon did post a vid where he was killed. Rodimus was in fact the successor but in that series, Optimus was never brought back and thus, did not merge with Rodimus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_The_Headmasters#Story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_The_Headmasters#Story)

In Masterforce, the story really doesn't follow where Headmasters left off. While the series was going on in Japan, the US saw the toy releases. The toy we know as Powermaster Optimus Prime was the star of the Masterforce series along with the Pretender's line of TF toys. But Optimus (who is actually a 19 yr old truck driver... !) doesn't die. In fact, the last episode of the series is rather badass!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_Super-God_Masterforce (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_Super-God_Masterforce)

On to Victory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_Victory#Story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_Victory#Story)
You`ll see in the Story section it states right away: "Victory is the story of the new Cybertron Supreme Commander, Star Saber". Whaaat? `Cybertron` in the Japanese series is the translation of Autobot. So where is the familiar leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime? Checking out the page for this Star Saber character:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Saber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Saber)
"In the year 2025, a skilled swordsman named Star Saber is chosen by God Ginrai as leader of the Autobots." God Ginrai?! Click on his page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginrai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginrai)
Optimus Prime from Masterforce! And his page states that he was rebuilt as Victory Leo after being killed by "the new Decepticon emperor, Deszaras" (Megatron basically.. just really bad ass looking.) Victory Leo, and the new Autobot (Cybertron) leader Star Saber could merge to form Victory Saber.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginrai#Victory_Leo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginrai#Victory_Leo)

And now for the merge sequence.

Victory Saber (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7bUMKZfPYU#lq-hq)

Battle Up!!

Solve this phrase:

"Whose Earth is a Blue Marble"

or

"Years Earth is a Blue Marble"

The first word may be wrong as I found 2 different pages as the first page of the book from amazon.  I think the first answer was from the prologue and the second is the first page of chapter 1.
Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: sully! on June 04, 2009, 05:20:52 PM
Close, but not quite. Also, remember to include links to your sources with your answer. I didn't notice when I put this together, but looking back at it, it appears I used the Introduction as the basis for my word count, starting at "Far out..."
Title: Re: Internet Scavenger Hunt
Post by: The Nstuff on June 04, 2009, 05:49:27 PM
I agree with decepticon.

Based on the source, if you count each word (starting from "Far out", even when they are connected with a hyphen, the 42nd word is "blue".  if you count each word, but hyphenated words count as one, then the word is "Whose"  The only word that makes more sense in between both of those is the word "planet" which is either word 41 or word 43.

So, <Blue/Whose> <earth> is a <blue> <marble>

OK, we'll give in here. I can see where the discrepancy is coming from since you're using Amazon as your source. The source I used for the HHGTTG word count is http://flag.blackened.net/dinsdale/dna/book1.html, (http://flag.blackened.net/dinsdale/dna/book1.html,) which does not hyphenate "blue" and "green", making the 42nd word "planet".

Planet Earth is a blue marble. Which is in reference to this famous photograph, referred to as "Blue Marble":
