What monitor should I use for gaming?
« on: November 19, 2013, 04:33:53 PM »
I am currently rocking some 28" 1920*1200 Hanns.G TN panels.  I was looking at upgrading them, is there anything worthwhile?  I was looking at some "cheap" 39" 4K display on amazon, while it would be insane for the desktop they are limited to 30Hz at full resolution.

Anyone game at 120Hz?  What about higher resolution panels, 2560x1600?  Is there any reason to upgrade?  Should I wait a few years for a 4K 120hz display to become cheap?

I am going to tell you to buy whatever you think is appropriate, and very soon. That way I can buy your old stuff and get it from you at the LAN.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

I have a Dell U2913WM that runs at 2560/1080 at 60hz. I also have a Acer 1920/1080 at 120hz. Personally I like my Dell monitor much better then my 120hz monitor. I might part with the 120hz if you are interested.

I was looking at these 120hz Catlett monitors, they are 2550x1440.  There's nothing gamer friendly available at a higher resolution that I could find.

I'd say hold out for that new monitor refresh thingy that nvidia is touting as some sort of gaming revolution. Wait for more screens to integrate it into their builds and then make your choice.

I was looking at another BenQ or a Asus monitor.  Theres no 1440p 120hz monitor available so I will wait.

There were a few Asus ones on sale during black friday but I missed out.

That Nvidia Gsync technology sounds pretty great.  Anandtech had an article about it, but apparently only Asus monitors are going to have the chip at first.  Here is the Anandtech article:

I've got an Asus 23.6" 120hz monitor (same one Shoctor has, maybe?) and I absolutely adore it.  If your system can do 120fps+ on everything you're totally cheating yourself by not running a monitor that can take advantage of it.
