Title: Rattling Fans
Post by: Mr.Tibbs on March 25, 2006, 04:49:00 PM
Everytime I shut off my computer the fans rattle, that is the only time they do it. Should I be worried, they are not old either I replaced all six fans in my Aspire X-Superalien case. I fried all of them when cleaning out the system, I just held them to an air compressor and spun them so hard it messed up the bearings. So should I be worried, mind you they only rattle when I shut off the case then stop.

do all of them rattle?  I might just be the motor angry about having no power and still spinning.

Well it is hard to tell, there are 6 of them. I believe it is the top one. Still love the case, don't really want to go through the trouble of replacing them. So I am just gonna keep them clean, I think some dust or something got in the bearings or something.

If you can tell how fast they are spinning (software monitor or strobe light) and they aren't affected by the noise when powering down, I don't think you will really have a "problem" till you can't stand the noise.

In actuality, you answered your own question.  Sounds like you have seriously degraded the overall life expectancy of the units by over rev'vin the fans.  As for when to replace them, that really gets down to when the noise is too much, the fans stop working all together, or you just feel like upgrading.

I mentioned before that the fans that I have in here now are all fairly new. It was the other ones I have fried, just making that clear. When I shut it off they make the noise, for about 3 seconds, it really doesn't bother me. Which reminds me gotta clean out my air filter.

with out reading any of the above.

it sounds like a bad bearing.

replace the fan once it goes out.  no sense replacing untill it becomes a real problem...

secondly its not like fans are expensive.  a whole 4.99 is a real killer.

It was weird, I think I pinpointed the problem to one fan. I don't know if I mentioned this or not but I have an ASPIRE X-Superalien case. The one fan on the side I recently put a filter on. I went out to clean it yesterday and put the panel back on. Went to turn it off last night didn't hear a damn rattle. Heh I think I solved it.
