overclocking a q6600
« on: February 02, 2008, 05:19:37 AM »
Im currently overclocking my q6600 from it's default clock of 2.4ghz to 3ghz.  currently running prime95 all cores are running about 54c to 55c in coretemp.  prime95's been running for about an hour and no errors.  after reading and googling what the safe temps would be for that proc Im assuming these temps are really safe.  Any of you guys have any input for me on this subject.  Im relatively new to overclocking the newer procs.  not since the old days of the celeron 300a have i attempted overclocking.

thanks

Update: it's been 7hrs or so of running prime95 torture test and my temps actually dropped down to 51c or lower:)

But will it blend?
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

back to the topic at hand...the safe temp limits depends on the stepping of your q6600. The b3 stepping is rated for up to 65 and the g0 is up to 75. Your way under the limits obviously so you could push it if you wanted. As long as your not doing above 65 your golden.

You'll find out very quickly the more you OC the q6600 the better performance it will achieve (regarding 3dmark or w/e your using to bench) the reason of course being (besides the obvious that its at a higher mhz) is that the Q6600 functions the best at higher FSB rates and of course the more you push the FSB up to increase MHZ, the higher it operates. anything 1200 FSB or more is golden. I had a link showing the HUGE difference in crysis of a quad core at 1066 vs 1333 and it was very very substantial (talking 2-3 sec load differences and frame boosts of 3-4 vs a q6600 at the same mhz but lower FSB)

You can take that bad boy to 3.2 on air fairly easy (especially if its the g0 stepping) but as it is, your operating around the 3.3ghz range of that of a c2d which is extreme overkill as I'm sure you can imagine) Good luck on your OC adventures

To me, i'd leave it at 3 as it's prob rock solid with hardly any voltage changes (think the volt change would be .135 or less vs stock...some said they can do 2.9 on stock volts) and is plenty of power unless u wanna crush the 3dmark as being the fastest sickest comp at Fites  :2thumbsup:
