Need mobo recommendations
« on: May 30, 2006, 01:35:44 PM »
Alright, here's the deal. I bought a PNY 6800GT video card off ebay. I was having problems with it and was able to determine it's a VIA chipset conflict so I will most likely need a new motherboard. However, I would like to not have to buy a new processor. I'm weary about switching the processor from one board to another as I've never done it before, but I'm looking to save some money.

What I have:
A P4 3.2 Ghz 478 chipset with HT

What I'd like:
A mobo with PCI-E AND AGP 8x capabilities (for future upgrading). ATA and SATA capabilities. LAN and onboard sound optional but preferred. All of which needs to have a socket 478 hookup. I don't know if something like that exists though nor do I know what brand I should get. The last two motherboards I bought I cheaped out on to save money so I'm looking for something of better value, even if it's a few bucks more.

I think you are going to need to do a lot of looking to find one.  AsRock makes a agp/pci-e board but i didn't find much else.  (I also didn't look too hard).

I found this: http://www.albatron.com.tw/english/it/mb/specification.asp?pro_id=160

Opinions? I came across it from this thread: http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t25920.html

Which claims socket 478's are compatible with 915's. Anyone know the truth to that? I'll do some more researching to see what else I can find.

I haven’t come across and mobo with pci-e/agp for the 478 chip but the Intel 915gm 478 chipset has pci-e.
For brands intel, asus, and abit are good choices
Never get a Chaintech! they break in like a month

Did you look at the specs for that board??  There is no AGP slot on it.  If you are going to go with PCI-E you should just bite the bullet and go with a SLI board.  more options to upgrade with in the future.

Lol, weird! How'd I miss that?? Ok, that board's off. I would love to go with PCI-E and SLI but the problem is I have an AGP card and a socket 478 processor. I'm trying to avoid getting a new proc if necessary, but as much searching as I've done it seems to be the only option.

Well.... Wait... You want to have the money to do something good then wait. See what happens to the prices once those fancy-shmancy new chips are released.

And how long till these new chips are released? New ones seem to be released all the time.

I think the new AMD Chipset will be out in a month. Maybe two... I can't find the press release right now.

Krurath, that board uses VIA 8237, which is the problem I'm having with my current board. The video card is not compatible with that. I should probably be looking for something with an Nvidia chipset to ensure compatibility.
