LCD's for FPS
« on: February 28, 2006, 06:29:12 PM »
I havent really looked in a while, but are LCD's still to crummy for FPS gamers?  What kind of response time would be not noticeable?

I'm not that up on it, But IIRC <= 16ms resonse time is generally acceptable for games. The generic cheapo pannels will still be slow, but the higher up ones (dell ultra sharp, etc) should provide a decent game expiernce.

It also depends what you are "used to"

I've always used CRT's, I have used friends LCD's in the past but there was ghosting galore.  Im thinking about purchaseing a 17" acer with 8ms response time.

I got a samsung syncmaster for christmas and have to say its nice.  I still mainly use a CRT while at home, but for LAN'in, the LCD can't be beat.

i have an lcd with 25ms refresh rate that i got about 2 years ago.  It gets no ghosting at all, but it was very high end at the time.

I know from selling monitors at work that acer stuff in general is junk.  It is really worth spending a little extra and moving up to a samsung or something in that range.

Nuff said....

But I'll say more anyways. 2ms is essentially CRT response times. I was like you for the longest time, only using CRT's, hated LCD's for gaming because of the ghosting. Then I saw a 16ms BenQ at QuakeCon 04 and my thoughts were immediately changed. Now with times of 8, 6, 4, and 2ms, I can't ignore them any longer. I would still rather wait for OLED displays, but it doesn't look like they'll be around any time in the near future (yes, I know they are used in cameras and PDA's now, but I'm not using a PDA as my monitor at a LAN).
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I have an 8ms monitor.. payed a good price and it wipes the floor with my samsung 19 crt in color and brightness and clarity... I was leary of the change, but I never see ghosting.

I found a 19" 8ms BenQ for ~230 (edit: After rebate) shipped from newegg, all the reviews look awsome and it was $10 more than the 17" acer.

Does that Hyundai come with a 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty?

Dell 2005FPW.  ~12ms response time, 1680x1050 res.  Never any ghosting, and games just look soooo sweet in widescreen... not to mention watching widescreen dvds or vids.  Tons of inputs and a VERY handy built-in usb 2.0 hub.

Anyone at either the 100 man lan or yesterday's 50 man lan saw it as I always take it with me to lan parties.  I don't have any other lcds and i'm not lugging a crt.

Dell is constantly having coupons for these monitors... right now it doesn't look like they have anything going on, but non-coupon price is currently $423 on dell.com.

Reviews are always glowing and supposedly this is the same lcd display as the Apple 20" cinema display, only this has more inputs, pip, picture by picture, usb hub, rotating screen to portrait, and telescoping stand.

Sorry, i think i sound like an infomercial, but I too stayed with CRTs for the longest time because all the LCDs I saw were crap with anything other than excel and word.  But this display proved me wrong.

prety much all of the larger pannels are the made by the same pannel manufacturer, just differnet company branding....

this is one time I will say go with dell over apple (but the cinema displays are really sexy)

Yo, if you want to check out my Samsung SyncMaster 930B sometime - I think it's great for gaming, and all things.
