Rolling out a hosting environment at work.  Needed some "capable" hardware.

haha, It's barely going to touch that CPU and it's nice that pfsense auto scales the state table based on RAM. Mine's half the size since only 8GB of RAM vs your 16. :(

Its an HP DL160 G9.  I needed something with a high clock speed.  This turbo's up to 3.2ghz I believe.  We should end up with 100's to 1000's of user VPN traffic over various VPN configurations.  Unfortunately the extra cores will go to waste in that regard.  I could have achieved a higher clock speed had I white box'd this but I needed something with a very good warranty and support since its home will be a 1000 miles away.  It started getting really pricey with the higher clock speeds.

For comparison sake our office which is in dire need of a pfsense hardware upgrade is running with an Atom D510 1.66ghz.  Its having trouble with the traffic from about 30 vpn connections.  I had to disable Postfix/Mailscanner and some other add-ons.  Poor thing's CPU is almost constantly at 25% (100% single core).  :(

Our NAS has an Atom and it's CPU is ALWAYS under what seems to be 40% load because of how it does encryption. (HIPAA requirement.)

The pfsense box for our LAN was going to be a dual cpu intel quad core with 24gb ram. Was going to try to do high bandwidth switching from it until I found a relatively cheap 20 port 10g switch. It's now the caching server(zfs, no dedup, lz4, multiple ssds, dual 10g NICs). Our current pfsense box is still overkill for what we're pushing, but its the lowest end hardware I had.

A bit, but still needs more ram. It can push a ton of cached data to steam/blizzard/gog clients. I built with future-proof in mind for our LAN party, I had some parts and only spent about 2k on the network and system upgrades.  Here's a diagram I threw together on my phone a few months ago:

Foray, thanks for joining us at our mini LAN this past weekend.  The switches and pfsense box worked really well.  I know some were enjoying the speedy legal file transfers.  ;)
