Ok my brother asked me to hook him up with a system now that he is making some money. He said he could spend about $1000 for the hardware. Here is what I got for him so far. I would appreciate any suggestions, comments etc.

Abit AN8 SLi Mobo
Athlon 64 3500+
2 Gb PC3200 DDR Ram
eVGA GeForce 7600GT 256Mb
2 WD SATA 120 Gb Drives
case, keyboard, mice, monitor.

Similar to the setup that I am runnin. Should do him well. I have had some issues with the board tho, so I am not so hot on Asus atm.

I read the model number, A8N SLI is an Asus board. One would not expect two competitors to have naming schema so closely matched.

No the board I am looking at is an abit. I am running an Abit NF7 right now and I have loved it. It has never disappointed me.

BTW, isn't asus the economy company for abit?? thought I remembered hearing that somewhere.

Not sure. I have had good luck with Asus until this board. I am on 3rd one now tho. Altho, a positive, they have great tech support and RMA people. They did not give me any crap when I returned the other two.

I am pretty sure abit and asus are their own companies. I used to have an abit nf7 board, but it died on me. I am an abit fan though.

i have to say go with the asus a8n sli-deluxe......ive built a pc with the abit 1n8 mobo at school and after a replacement caue for that one cince it didnt route power correctly, the second one wouldnt recognize a SATA drive as SATA, but it would recognize it as IDE.....after that i told them to buy an a8n sli-deluxe and we installed it in 15 minutes and it ran perfectly first time. I also ise that MOBO in my pc (my first build) and again, it worked flawlessly first time!(keep in mind that was my first build too)

MSI makes quality products across the board.

I'm running the K8n Neo now with my 3700+, has been rock solid for months. I bought it for $90, its probably cheaper by now.

Random recommendation, couldn't you roll the pair of SATA drives into one bigger one and save some green? Like a 300 gig or whatever.

I have to say go with a DFI board, I wish I would of gotten one instead of this gigabyte GA-k8nxp that I have.

I have 2 WD SE16 250GB SATAII drives in Raid0, you can buy em for less than $100 now. I get 112MB/Sec sustained tranfer and some pretty insane bursts.

If you are into overclocking at all, why not pick up a opteron 146 cpu and some ddr500 memory. For a ~$180 cpu you can crank the clock up to FX-57 levels (2.8Ghz) on the stock AMD cooler (Its a 4 heatpipe monster). I got a 2GB G.Skill DDR500 from newegg for less than $160 shipped, and it overclocks like a champ (270mhz with stock volts and timings).

The PC is for my brother....and this will be his first. So OC'ing the board is out. As for the 1 bigger SATA drive instead of the 2 smaller ones that is actually a better deal and saved me $50 to put towards a bigger monitor. Thanks for all the recommendations everyone and when I get it done I will run 3DMark 06 on it and let you know the results.

Ok I got the parts and put it together tonight and ran 3d mark 06 on it. Here are the scores.

3dMark Score : 3036
SM2.0 Score : 1367
HDR/SM3.0 Score : 1247
CPU Score : 866

System Specs:
