York Lan game variation
« on: September 18, 2006, 12:07:11 PM »
What is the general feeling of playing some other games at the next York LAN?

I personally am getting bored playing the same type of rounds in UT2k4 and would not be extremely dissapointed if the game did not get played.  Counterstrike is also getting boring to play all the time since it really has not changed in 6 or seven years (guessing on the exact year).  BF1942 and BF2 seem like we never have enough to play a full round for whatever the reason.

Here are my proposals:

 1.  What about playing something like a Rainbow Six or  Swat 4 type game.  This may involve reaching into the vaults of previous games, but the cost to get these games is cheap.  Everyone's system should be able to run these as well.

2.  What about playing something like Civ4 or C&C generals?  This has been discussed previously and sounds like it could somewhat work.

3.  What about a flight game or racing game? Acekilla brought up the idea of a new air combat game tah supports 64 people.

These are just some ideas to liven up the routine of the same FPS games over and over.  Throw in your thoughts about mixing some other games with the FPS standards.

Some things I was thinking about this weekend.

1) BF2142 is supposed to ship that week.  If it does, I would love to play some of that.

2) I played the Zombie mod to CSS this weekend.  I had a blast with this game.  Not alot of skill needed, just a lot of blood and mayhem.

3) Agent was telling me about a mod for UT called Killing Floor.  Seems to be a team based zombie mod for UT.

4) Is there any sort of local game option for Company of Heroes?

Yeah like I was telling cuzz, Killing Floor might be interesting. It's not really a team-based mod... well... only 1 team I guess, so not like CTF kind of team-based. If you ever played the UT2004 mode where you have waves of monsters coming at you and you have to fight them off. It's that basic premise. The main difference is that it requires strats and good teamwork to pull it off. It's actually hard. Everyone is on the same team, and TONS of zombies just start spawning. I've played games where theres 10 of us in the middle of this street, our backs to each other, fighting off the zombies(sh!tloads). Then a few zombies killed a guy in the middle and are group got split in two and we all got clusterfuked. Fun.

http://www.killingfloor.freedomsnet.net/   if you want to check it out.

But yeah Company of Heroes does have lan play.

I agree with shadow but. Do you really think many people have those games? (like me) I thinks it's the best experience if everyone playes a selected game and is really into it rather than 5 or so people

This is a valid point.  The problem is, we only have 5 or so people playing BF2 at times.  Thats including a room ull of 100+.  Interests is being lost, systems can't handle the game (EA issues), etc..  This is totally my personal feeling when I say this, but I feel if we do not modify the games being played, the LANs will become less and smaller.

I know previously this was a problem with the York LANS through GALT.  Interest started to be lost in playing the same games over and over.  Atendance dropped and we struggled.  This also seemed to be an issue at the 15 man lan when it came to BF1942 and BF2.  That was basically half of the main games to be played. Unfortunately, nothing has been released in recent to really catch everyones attention.

No disrespect to Krurath 108, it is just my personal thoughts and they don't rule the world.

Well, I will be bringing a server with CS:S Zombie mod and Gun Game.  I am not too sure if gun game would get that much intrest, but Zombie Mod is fun!

Cuzz played on my internet server and had fun. The round starts with everyone running off and hiding and fortifying their postion then suddenly someone will turn into a zombie with 5000 health!!! That person then trys to knife more people. Every person they get joins the army of the undead trying to take over the humans! So the next zombie turned gets 2500 health and each consecutive zombie gets 2% less health. Apparently the strain of zombification virus gets weaker. ;)

On my config rilfes are turned off but ammo for other weapons is jacked up! So it take teamwork and good planning to fend of the zombies, but the blood and gore is everywhere.

Just to make a point about how popular it is and how many people join our server, we had a problem yesterday... I USED MY 100GIGS OF TRANSFER FOR THE MONTH!!!
So right now I am moving hosts for more monthly transfer. LOL

This game will be a fun staple for a little bit, but I don't expect it to last too too long since the map selection is only about 10 or so really good ones, but more are on the way. Speaking of which, I am hoping to have my map themed after American McGee's Alice ready by the LAN!  Hopefully this will give a sureal gameplay for a little change from good'ol urban scenes.

But as for other games... I would like to see a good flight combat game that has a low learning curve and I will jump on that. The reason I want the low learning curve is so that we can get more people to jump in and keep it fun and not have the team of ace pilots and team of n00bs.

This has been my scatter brained post. Thanks for reading. Hopefully it was understandable.

As long as Kev approves it, I will be bringing  my servers and running fear, COD2, and whatever anyone wants.  Yes I noticed a lot of people including myself getting sick of the same old games.  I can't play CSS anymore I just watch once and a while.  Oh yea i almost forgot Im gonna run a server with Dark messiah: might and magic as long as it's released on time.  that game is something alittle different and fresh.  If your not sure of this game check out the demo it's a lot of fun.

I definitely used to love the original Rainbow 6 game (I think I still have it at home!) but I haven't tried any since. I know I won't be at the York LAN but this is something I would definitely be up for at the next big LAN. I too am tired of the same games. Half the time I end up sitting around not sure what to do because I played UT2K4 for several hours already or no one's playing BF42 (a game I can't even bring myself to play anymore, sadly). Good mods for UT2K4 or other games with different gameplay would certainly be a welcomed change.

Maybe for the next big LAN we could get two different types of games to be the "Main Attractions" and advertise them as so! This may bring others in with the promise of something different in their normal gaming routine.

Just saw Shadohawk's suggestion of some sort of flight combat game. I'd all for that! I've always wanted to try X-Wing vs Tiefighter. Would that game be too outdated or hard to find?

We could also play some FEAR. I know dayo and I had fun with that at the 150. It's easy enough to get into and play.

Yes, F.E.A.R. was great but for me it was getting old a little too quickly. A lot of the battles start to become repititious, as well as all the levels seeming very similar. Nice to play for a little while though.

Another game to try would be freespace 2.  I am not sure of how big a server you can make but it is a freeware game and it is fun to play.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

yeah FreeSpace 2 SCP.

The fan community upgraded the graphics quite a bit, since Volition released the source code. It is probably the best space flight combat games you'll find. Fun game, definitely a change from our normal routine. Though, I will say the learning curve is somewhat difficult. Especially if you havent played a 360 degree game(Descent!).

I have a very rare RTS that if anyone who has ever heard of Frank Hubert would love to play. Anyone remember the Dune Series, Dune, Dune 2, and Dune 2000? Great games, here is a piece of trivia:

What was the last game ever made by Westwood Studios?

Answer that and you will know the game that I have is very rare and hard to find.
