Win7 + WinXp = ???

Is this the worst in unholy matrimony or a blessing is disguise?

good marketing idea. and like some comments said.. it's probably mainly geared towards the military needed to be updated but also compatible too.

I don't see how XPM could be bad in any way. It's strange sortof, and oddly fascinating, but I doubt I'd ever use it. Good idea though. Gets rid of the flimsy legacy compatibility support, and puts in almost 100% WinXP compatibility. I can see it come in handy if I want to run older 16-bit games, though.

This is a good addition. Microsoft is finally using their heads.

One thing brought up in the comments section is while this is good for power users like us, the main public will be confused by it.  Installing antivirus software on it, setting up old printers on it and then trying to print to it using windows 7 etc.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

"It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions via a download from the Microsoft web site."

Hence that.. It won't be available via the simpler versions.

Yes but how many idiots are there out there with more money than brains who will go for the most expensive and best OS out there just to have it.  And they are the ones who don't know what they are doing.  Granted not having this feature available with all versions will limit the idiots from having problems but there will still be issues.

So there will be issues. Whoopdeedoo. It might confuse the hell out of the people who don't know what to do with it, but for the people who do, it'll be a really good thing. I don't see what the problem is.

For what it's worth.... I gave RC1 the benefit of the doubt and ran it for a while yesterday. XP mode isn't available yet. In fact, I actually had more driver issues with win7 beta/vista drivers with it than I had with the beta release. My soundcard, while having slight crackling/static issues in vista, could be fixed by rebooting vista. It just wouldn't work in win7 at all. X-fi, too.   :chair:    I was forced to use my onboard sound, which had tiiiiiny static issues, but that could have been from the native 7 drivers. I couldn't even find beta drivers for my particular c-media chipset. :-(   :furious:

However, win7 beta keys do work for rc1.  :1: I can verify that as I used mine. This'll be a bit a mixed bag when it's released, is all I have to say. That is, unless people really start finishing up their Win7 driver sets in time for the rumored sales of Win7 with pc's in time for the back to school season. The actual OS is pretty stable, though. I didn't go through all the ins and outs, but needless to say whatever performance you got from the beta, you'll get in the rc.

I'll wait for the official release of RC1. May 5th. I'm on build 7022 at the moment, and am having no driver issues at all. Except for the nvidia W7 beta drivers. Major issue with UT3 that made the game crash whenever you got near a portal. So I went back to the latest vista drivers.

This has been my favorite Windows OS since.... ever. I can't wait for the release.

Well, if you can't wait for the release why don'tcha go up to Washington state and and make them work faster?????  :hehemean:

Oh, btw, it is the official rc release that I ran. Build 7100. Unless the one coming out for the public on may 5th is different, that is.

I just prefer to wait for non-leaked versions is all. Even if it is official.. for something like an OS, I prefer to take no chances. Though I did download the 7022 build which is obviously leaked... Ah, Fudge it.

Running Build 7068 (x64) here and everything works just fine, except the onboard Promise 378 controller, which didn't work under Vista either, so I had no expectations for it. My X-Fi (Fata1ty Edition) works great too, no sound issues for me.

The XPM feature will be a godsend to the Enterprise market. There are too many programs that are business critical that just don't function in Vista/Win7 natively, but work just fine in XP. I think we'll see a much swifter adoption of Win7 in the enterprise market for this reason alone than we ever saw with Vista. In response to Rathe's point/Agent's reply, this is a feature aimed at and developed for business and enterprise users, not the home user. Power users may be able to get some benefit from it, but it's not geared toward them. Those that do not know what they're doing will A)probably not even know how to get it installed as it will be an optional update, so it won't get installed automatically nor will it be included on the boxed install, and B)the majority of OEM PC's will come loaded with Home Premium, so this feature will not be available to them regardless.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
