Whats This World Coming Too
« on: June 13, 2007, 03:30:42 PM »
Was over on a few sites and found a bunch of guys trying to convince ppl that Mac's are better for gaming than PC's...What is this world coming too. I'll just contribute it to lack of knowledge. I guess my question is how can a system that doesn't have 1/2 of the support of the gaming market be able to make a claim that the system is better. I just don't see any mac breaking a benchmark of what a 6000+ with a decent 7 series or even low 8800 can put down. IDK, just crazyness I guess in my opinion. This isn't hateraide on Mac users, because I actually wanna get a mac ibook or something. Mainly because they are undoubtedly just amazing in graphic and video editing, or anything multimedia. But for gaming, it was just something I found hilarious

Just wanted to share

IMO: Macs are for art students.  PC's are for people who like blowing Crap up real pretty and managing networks - at the same time.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

What is the world coming to, indeed. You misspelled "to" twice in your post.

Personally I love my Mac. I have found software that works so well together for some tasks that I would rather work on it for web dev.

I use text wrangler (text editor) with cyberduck (ftp client) they work seamlessly with tabs for each file I am working on and as soon as I hit save it updates the live file. I know there are other things that do this, but none I have used has been so simple. Also when I hit F9 I see ALL my windows I have open. I hit F10 and it shows me all the windows for the foreground application that I am working with at the moment (Makes life easier in Photoshop.) I hit F11 and all the windows SLIDE out of the way so I can see my desktop. And I know you are going to say that Vista does this, but it does it in a different way (that sucks IMHO.) Adium is the cleanest IM program I have ever used. iTunes even though the program looks the same on Windows and Mac it just seems to run better on the Mac. I am using an old G4 Powerbook running at 1.25Ghz with 1 gig of RAM and I find myself just more productive for certain tasks. As for gaming, I believe you can't outperform the PC right now just because of available games. Now, if Apple made a better API to cross platform games I would rather be on my Mac 90% of the time just because I really like it. Now if you were to say that all games didn't care what platform, I would say that the platform then becomes a moot point since a lot but, not all of the hardware is the same at this point. But then it's back to the APIs because there really isn't anything that runs directly on the metal besides the OS. But to each their own, personally I don't see Mac having the edge in Multimedia anymore, but they do have a strong market in the printing business still because there is so much hardware already in place that talks the same language. As for compatibility and ease of use taking to another network I think OS X destroys Windows. It's very straight forward and powerful where as when I tried Vista (And even some instances of XP.) it was EXTREMELY cumbersome.

As for managing a network for low level CLI management I would rather be on my Mac. For managing MS servers I have RDP. For managing a lot of Unix-like systems I have X if it's available.

Also as for preloaded software. When I bought this thing there was only ONE software package that was a demo and guess what it was! MS Office. There was no crapware at all. I had programs for managing my music, movies, and photos. I had a program for making movies and dvds. It had DVD player software! It had an IM client for AOL. It has a built in program to sync with my handheld devices and phone. And it had all the things that you get with Windows: WebBrowser, Mail client, Media player, Address book. How about for the budding developers? You can download a slimmed down version of Visual Studio now... My Mac came with Xcode and has none of those silly restrictions made by MS on it.

I know this sounds like a rant, but you can't compare the two. It's not Apples to Apples. It's Apples to Windows. And you can't come off saying Mac's are just for students where is your justification for that? These are two VERY different products. Also, we all have been using the incorrect nomenclature for this whole argument. We are ALL using PCs. Some are Apple or Mac PCs and some are Windows PCs and Whatever OS PC. PC is just a personal computer.

PS I just remembered. 99% of all applications for the Mac have built in spell check from the OS since it comes with an Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus built in. :)

Last i checked you can run Bootcamp and then run XP on a mac... therefore they now make excellent gaming machines.

For those who dont have any interest in learning the details on how to build and maintain a custom built computer a mac now seems to be the easy solution.

Game on!

This is true. They were trying to say how Mac is far superior because of its capability to run 16GB of memory and it's whole "super cluster" processing power. And then continued to point out there amazing quad 7900's which for some reason they think owns anything out on the market. I guess Mac doesn't have ties just yet to the GTX or GTS 8 series, that and 7 series though in quad GPU, still isn't that impressive because 7 series cards in general don't scale well. It's not truly double frames when u go to sli, more like 1/3 more frames. That and a 8 series with the last driver release from Nvidia bumped me 7 FPS on my benches. Anyways, you can game on a mac no doubt. But as fair as being a superior gaming system over a PC, there isn't any chance that that statement is true. That and the fact anything over 2gb of memory at the moment is really overkill anyways, so 16Gb is just pointless, and you reach a point when your benches are taxed by your GPU and not your processing power, and i'm sure a simple dual core would reach that limit of quad GPU (there just isn't bandwidth to even process it all..it'd be bottlenecking in memory for sure...Just because the bandwith it would take would be overwhelming). Anyways, a single 8 series takes 2 7900's in benches to begin with, so quad would be crushed by a sli 8 series rig anyways. And the fact that once Barcelona breaks out, nothing is really going to touch AMD for a while (in my opinion from what I've read). Thats about the end of my rant on Mac vs PC on the discussion of what's a better gaming rig.

Oh and did i mention, No OEM mac hardware..LOL

Personally I think it's a conspiracy so it makes you want to only run iTunes on a Mac. I can't tell you how many times iTunes has either crashed/frozen my entire system or it became so unresponsive that I couldn't even minimize it. All I can say is WinAmp never gave me those problems in the sum total of the 8 years I've run that.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Winamp FTW no doubt...It's all about the million and one color themes and skins winamp offers. That and it has it's amazing plugin setup and u configure just about anything in it. Only reason i put up with Itunes is because of my Nano. Sorta had too, but now Winamp and even Media Center are offering support for the ipods..so mark my words Itunes, Your Uppance Shall Come!

I think part of it is that iTunes just can not cope with a library as big as mine. I "only" have a little over 5000 songs in my library, but because iTunes on Windows is just a quick and sloppy port I can't believe that it's optimized in any way. And forget about trying to use Cover Flow.....

Winamp loads quickly and sorts through my library and jumps to any song I pick from the Quick Search waaaaayyyyy faster than any other prog I've seen, even iTunes on the Mac.

Bleh to iTunes and Winamp. QSP is slim on resources(~4mb), and has a fantastic database system. WinAmp feels slow and bloated in comparison.
