Title: What should I do with my spare system
Post by: _!Rathe!_ on May 08, 2008, 02:22:32 PM
I was looking around the house and I noticed i have a half decent system laying around.  It is a single core intel probably around 2 Ghz or so with 768 Megs of RAM.  My home IP address has had the habit of changing lately but I do have a dyndns.org domain name that is updated all the time.  So my question is What should I do with this system??

Web server, media server, game server.  Take your pick, or choose all three!  I did the same thing with my spare single core 3.4ghz.  That's where I host my avatars, files and media.  I also use it for bit torrent downloads to take the strain off my gaming machine, which also let's me keep the gaming machine shutdown at night when I am not using it essentially prolonging it's lifespan.  And if yer worried about another monitor/keyboard/mouse cluttering a desk:  just hook them up to install OS and other proggies, but put a VNC server up on it and voila, a headless server!

I have a media center pc already.  I used my old gaming system and put it behind my TV (connected via VGA cable) then I did the RealVNC server on it with a IR keyboard and trackball (I hate the keyboard and mouse btw so I remote into it most times).  But in actuality I think I will make this one a media pc (with media center edition of windows) cause I watch the movies through my network anyway and I can put my TV Tuner card in it and record TV.  I am still open to other suggestions though as I am not married to this idea yet.  Only engaged right now.

Thats what I'm doing...I have a Dell 2.4 P4 sitting around. I put 30 bucks in for a 1gb of memory and now I have it configured as a dedicated game server for CoD4, UT2004, CS:S Gungame and Fear Combat. Took some time to do but I tend to think it was worth it. Slapped some server 03 so I have DHCP going for my 3 unmanaged 3com 24 ports

Anyways....

Back to the topic. You should also consider Windows Home Server. With all of the available add-ins for WHS you can really do a lot with it. I use mine for nightly automatic backup, host a few websites, uTorrent with the web UI installed so I can download torrents from anywhere (locally or when I'm away), it is a remote desktop proxy into any of the machines on my network, file server (of course) with redundancy to protect from single disk failure losing data, streaming media (music, video, and pictures) over the web via the WebGuide add-in, and to stream movies, music and pictures to my Xbox360. I used to have an add-in installed that would download RSS feeds (mostly podcasts) so they could also stream to my XBox, but it malfunctioned most times. I'd like to find a different one that works better though so I can watch things like Diggnation or Totally Rad Show, but I haven't seen any comparable ones yet.

Check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/default.mspx

Setting up a server was an idea I had all along but I didn't want the headaches of running a domain for 2 or 3 computers.  I will look into the home server and most likely will set one up at least for testing or evaluation.  Thanks for the idea sully.

I think you may have to push it up to 5,0ghz at least.  But you could get away with 4 and just OC your GPU and Shader clocks!

I dont' think I can OC the GPU as it is a onboard video system.

Wow, all these ideas make me wonder if I should do the same with a couple of the random computers I've pack-ratted away...

After thinking about it I think I am going to do a multimedia system with it.  Gonna install WinXP Media center edition and go from there.  The main reason being I hate dragging my old gaming system out from behind the TV when I go somewhere just for the files.  Yes I know I need a bigger hard drive in my main system but until I do that this situation will work.

This was awhile back, I don't remember what the thread was discussing. Maybe it was something about certain operating systems. If memory serves me, he said it was a waste; but that was years ago and it is all a blur to me now.
