Title: What can we do better next time?
Post by: Pride on September 19, 2005, 11:28:56 AM
Please keep this thread to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism only...

I thought we could have organized and distributed information about our servers a little better.. seems noone knew where to get patches for the first 4 hours... that is our fault... so we will try to get server info in your hands earlier and more clearly.

I along with many others noticed that there was way too much leeching of files going on during the LAN.  i think some people just showed up to leech files and didn't really play much at all.  we even designated a time when it was approprate to share files but still leeching took place over the times when we were gaming.

that was really my only gripe.  everything else was pretty good.

That is definately something that shouldn't have happened... but at the same time... it is near impossible for us to prevent it.  If someone shares out their games folder on their PC... we cant prevent it.

We need to make it more of a point to unshare all of your shares prior to coming... and only share during designated times...

good observation!

keeping names out of this, i noticed someone only play a few rounds of Counterstrike.  all the rest of the LAN he leeched files and Installed them with the help of FITES staff and other people like that.

people like this should NOT be invited/allowed  back.

I know I am raving a raving DC++ newbie, but I must say that I really liked the app! Once we get the managed switches going, I say we close down netbios/smb ports. Straight up only use DC++.

My reasons:
1. You can shutdown the hub at will.
2. Less bandwidth intensive than 16 file copy windows open. (Nice queing system)
3. You can throttle your shares/leeches.
4. ITS SEARCHABLE! No more "Where is it!?"
5. You know who is transfering what!
6. Fun stats on moved data!
7. Built in chat engine.
8. Resume of your que automagicly when the person comes back online after gaming.

So, you might not get your downloads the fastest, but you will get them with out slowing down the rest.

Great idea... can you come up with a "how to" that we can post on here and hand out at the lan?

I will work on it. Most of the Clients that I have tried out are pretty much the same. I will most likely write it for the official client.

I feel pretty! and freaking sleepy still.

I am working with a version of the DC hub that lets me cap transfers at the hub level.

I think that "Install Guides" for installing, patching, and cracking games in the form of image files should be handed out upon registration.  I'd be willing to help out in the creation of said flyers.

anyway...

Any time someone asks for FITES tech support the staff member should ask if they followed the sheet first. Could save some headaches.  Assisting non-gamers with leeching tech support should not be on our priority list.

I'd prefer a bit more organized gaming, but that's just me, and this was a more relaxed event.

Bravo on the great venue and sheer hilarity of some people (sorry agent).

The lan truly was a great time.

Everyone should have THEIR copy of the game installed and patched properly from the get go.

Yeahhh ... handing out a paper saying "this is how to crack a game" can NEVER end well ....

I have to followup what the other people said.  FITES does not condone illegal copying/cracking of games.  Developers work hard on providing quality games and include copy protection for reasons.  It is impossible for us to verify every install, but this is a practice that we can't aid or help in any fashion.

Anyway guys this is not the post for this type of discussion and from the first post it looks as if pride would like to keep it on topic so back to the question"What can we do better next time"?

Yeah

Maybe get some more games involved!! I sorta thought we dragged out CS way to long. Then, we did BF2 pretty much for the rest of the night. I know theirs a big group of BF42 and BF2, but I would have liked to get some Unreal 2k4 going. You can only play the same maps a certain amount of times before they get boring. And since the server massivly lagged on huge maps, we were constricted to a certain few (aka 3). Like I said in my other post, it really buged me that everyone left half way through the thing. I understand people have jobs and stuff, but then another group of 12 slept from 1-9. I get the fact of taking a powernap, but it frustrated me that people decided to sleep through. So really, the entire event was over around 1. After that, 6 people were messing around, but it was pointless. I don't know. The leeching seemed to slow everything down a bit. People should come to game, not leech. Guys should also consider the option of "ACTUALLY BUYING THE GAMES". Getting iso's from people, transferring them, and updating them took forever. Overall it was fun, but a few changes are needed for the next upcoming event.

Unshare Files
Everyone Actaully own a install copy of the games

Positive notes, the food was good and their was plenty of space. I appologize about my ranting ahead of time as I know I'm gonna get slamed with critism for this post

Nope, no slamming... it was constructive... you made a complaint, followed it up by how to make it better for next time... that's all we ask

Dave,

We actually have been discussing (amongst staff and admins) several of your concerns.  There was WAY to much leeching, and we are working at putting a new plan in play on that issue.

Not sure why the larger maps were lagging.  The two primary servers being used that night (unless someone fired it up on one of the slower machines) were p4 2.6 to 2.8 with 1.5 to 2 gigs of ram each.

Not sure if the lagging resulted from the aforementioned leeching or not.

I know that a group of 4 or so were playing UT somewhere in the 1 to 3 hour.

But, you are correct, there was a breakdown in organized gameplay after the first several rounds of BF2.  Some people left, some people crashed, some people played other stuff.

Ultimately, I want to make it bigger and better, so your responses are valued.  Keep em coming.

Keep this talk about legit stuff:

No CD cracks are one thing, but talking about shareing keys is BAD. Shareing ISO's is fine but keys is a no no.

i had a great time at the lan.  The biggest problem for me was just that i was tired.  We were setting up until 3am on friday, and then i was up again at 8am to finish up. Next time i need to try an snag some more sleep.

Yeah, wimp. I didn't sleep at all. I was up same time you were Friday night and arose same time Saturday morning. I didn't sleep at all.

...I dearly paid for it when I absolutely passed out at the sight of my bed, but..... :)

I really don't have anything new to add. All of my thoughts have already been discussed.

On the subject of leeching, I don't think it should be eliminated completely. It's an aspect of a LAN Party that's expected to be there and outright banning of it just wouldn't be cool.

However, promoting DC++ as the only means of filesharing is a good idea. We can control when the DC hub is running, or we could limit transfer speeds to avoid bottlenecks. Plus it queues your transfers so you aren't grabbing 20 files from one person simultaneously and killing their HD/network.

And as I said, everything else has already been mentioned, so no sense in repeating.
