Title: Weird MSN Hotmail issue...
Post by: decepticon on May 16, 2008, 11:32:09 AM
This is weird.  I just had a bunch of emails sent from my hotmail account as Spam and were returned as undeliverable.  I know that virii can send spam out using your outlook address book, but I don't use outlook.  Could there possible be a virus on MSN's internal mail server?  I have checked all my machines that I access my account from for keyloggers/spyware/virii - nothing was found.  Has this happened to anyone else?

I used to see stuff like this happening at my old job all the time due to our Barracuda Spam Firewall (great product btw).  A spammer would message in with a bogus email address.  When the Barracuda would try to send a spam alert message back to the sender it would bomb.  The original target of the spam would get an undeliverable message in their inbox because the rejection email from the barracuda wouldn't go through.  I told all my users there to ignore them and delete them.  I wonder if it is the same type of thing going on.

What was especially weird is it had the TO: addresses that were all in my address book on the MSN site.  Something is amiss.

No, just another spammer way of getting past your filters. Actually bouncing them back to you like you sent them.

But how the hell did they get a hold of my address book?  That's kept on MSN's servers.

And I got 7 more of the same kind.  I dunno, I thought it was just odd.

EDIT: ShadoHawk: I thought I would remove the email addresses... You don't want a bot farming them.
