Ultimate Ubuntu
« on: December 26, 2008, 08:04:04 AM »
I was talking to my cousin on Christmas and noticed he got rid of Vista on my aunt's pc. And replaced it with Ultimate Ubuntu, and I was asking how it is. I have tried many distros of Linux and I just really wanted one where the wireless works right out of the box. And he told me this distro does just that. So I downloaded it last night and installed it on my notebook pc. It has a Realtek 8185 A/B/G, and I was blown away it worked right out of the box like he told me.

Apparently it is a one man show. Just one guy makes this distro and only him. One guy to do all the drivers and other things. If you are into linux and I know some of you are give this one a try. He also has Ultimate Ubuntu Gamers Edition. I am going to have to give that one a try.

I tried just the normal Ubuntu on my laptop and it worked fine with my wireless.  It ran great and I just used it recently to fix all of the computers at work.

Ubuntu in my opinion is one of the best supported distros avail as far as plug and play. I havent ran into too many issues with getting custom drivers. Its the only one I really use anymore (used to deal with Suse a little but now I'm more Ubuntu than anything)

Well that is the thing with me and linux. I only tried wireless with Realtek wireless devices. I know that certain wireless cards work right out of the box with certain distros and specific versions. This one is the only one I found out to work right out of the box with my Realtek wireless.

Shouldn't be too difficult, it has everything for wine all installed. I should try and see if I can play COD4 on it.

Well i just installed Starcraft and the expansion and they run with no problems. The only issue is with BNET it doesn't display the multiplayer screens it only displays text.

According to the WineHQ, it`ll run COD4 with minor tweaks flawlessly.

Crysis has minor issues that shouldn't mess up normal game play.
