I have a few suggestions for the BF2 tourney at the lan. By far, it is the most popular. Still only 7/10 of everyone going is registered on the alp server, but its still the most popular. I think it would be better to give it a better time slot than 7am. Also, there's 9 teams signed up so far. I have not a clue to what the rules are, but there's no way you can have a double elim tourney in 2 hours. Let me know if you need any suggestions for the rules. I've been playing with a cal team so I have plenty of experience.

Des.... I appreciate your feedback... and they are things we will definitely consider.
There were a few reasons that we put BF2 where we did.
1. We put it at 7 AM Sunday to try to get people to stay longer. At our last 2 events, we put the big games first, then 3/4 of the way through the event, everyone left. Whats the point in having a 24 hour event if everyone leaves 18 hours into it.
2. Also, by putting it at 7 AM, we actually have 5 hours to work with... since no tourney's are really scheduled for after it, we have plenty of time to get it done.
-
Sounds good, good thinking. I know exactly what you mean with people leaving early. It drives me crazy when people leave so early after they lose a tourney.
-
Since we are doing suggestions, is there a chance that the UT2004 CTF 6v6 tournament could be 5v5 instead? The UT2004 competitive CTF community has their matches as 5v5. It makes everything less crowded and organized. If not, it's cool ;]
Another thing. [s2i] may not be able to round up 6 people for some of the tournaments, so is it fine if we play 6v5 or 6v4? (maybe even 6v3 :P)

I underestand your concern.. the reason we left it as 6v6 is that since the other team tourney's are 6v6, we figured it might be nice to have teams stick together... rather than having to cut 1 person from your team just for that tourney. This way, you can find 5 other people to be on your team, and you always have a group together.
Yes, you can always play with less people if you choose... but I am sure that there will be people who don't have teams, and are looking to join one. That is left up to the team captains.
-
dont move it. people will be waking up then ready for some more gaming.
i personally will be coming in at 6 30am sunday morning after going home to sleep.
-
I plan on sleeping right at my comp. Pillow and all. But I suppose Ill leave my clothes on though this time.

Well, if you absolutely wanted to take it to court, the only games that are played at least 6v6 are the BattleFields. CSS and UT2004 are 5v5 ;p No worries though.
Also, can we recruit some players to be on our team AT the lan? Or do they have to be signed up on our team on the intranet part of the website BEFORE the lan?

What is this sleep thing you speak of? Isn't this a 24 hour gaming LAN? I didn't see naptime on the schedule
Probably will end up eating those words at some point.

Going by the rules I read regarding BF1942 it seems pixel-aiming is allowed. Is this true? I don't think anyone would really use that tactic at the LAN but you never know.
Can't wait for the Allied side of MG...that's just wrong! ;)
-
what is pixel aiming?
-
BF42 has a static sky so at the beginning of a match (and in some, throughout) you can quickly jump into a tank or artillery and destroy enemy assest before they even move them (namely planes). On Battleaxe, the Allies can destroy both enemy planes before takeoff and on MG Axis can take out one of the planes at the beginning. From playing in TWL matches a long time ago with this game I can speak from experience (I can also tell you other maps that it can be done on).
Basically, the match starts and the closest one to the tank or whatever jumps in, aims the cannon at a certain spot in the sky, and shoots. It's a rotten tactic but in the competitive world without a way to monitor it it's going to happen.
I'll give you an example that I used in a match before (if you can't beat them you have to join them, right?): In Battle of the Bulge on the Allied side there's a flag that spawns an M10, just south of the Axis base. I could actually hop into that, turn the gun to the left, and align it with a certain spot on the camouflage mesh it was under to destroy a PanzerIV on one shot at the wheels, all within 5 seconds. No, it's not aiming at the sky but you could actually do that trick with the artillery that spawns at the main Allied base. Someone jumps in the artillery and turns it just right so that you can hit the east bridge from that base without the need of a scout. (I'm not going to give hints on how to do it on the maps listed for the tournament) It's a tactic that is legal in most competitive ladders, the reason why I joined the 3FL since it had a gentlemen's agreement to play the way the developers intended the game to be played.
Anyways, that's pixel-aiming.
I thought this issue was addressed at the first 100-man LAN?
-
This is the first I have ever heard of this...
-
I could have sworn this was brought up before (namely by your's truly). It's never been a problem from what I've seen in the past LANs but it's still an issue that should be addressed, just in case.
-
I'll have Xankriz look into it and modify the tourney rules
-
This is an interesting point and I am glad it was brought to my attention. After discussing it with Pride we decided that although its not what one might consider 'cheating' it is most definitely not how the game was intended to be played. The rules have been updated so that if this action is witnessed we can DQ the offending team.

You do realize that without someone there to watch the beginning moments of a match that it's VERY difficult to provide evidence via a SS? Due to the distance of the shots you most likely never hear or see them, just witness the equipment in question blow up. An admin present at the beginning of a round would solve that issue, but again, I doubt we'll see it anyways. It takes a lot of practice to get shots like these down and it doesn't work on every map due to layouts. But it's pretty obvious when it happens since the equipment blows up for no reason :shakeno:
If you'd like a description of where they can happen on the maps being used, PM me. I'm 100% sure about 2 maps, not sure about a 3rd though.
-
If someone has a screen shot of destroyed vehicles with little to no time or tickets lost, it will be obvious what happened.
-
is the quake tournament quake 3 or quake 4
-
Right now, Quake 3, but it may change based on demand.
-
Quake 4 would rock espcially if you use the Q4MAX mod. The maps you have in the rules are for Q4 too.

But it's not undeniable proof. A team (assuming they were pretty dishonest) could very easily just bazooka a plane at the start, grab a screenshot, and claim it was a pixel aim. That would give them an automatic win. But, I'm probably just being paranoid on the whole situation (bad past experiences in match play) so it's probably no big deal. Maybe just for the MG and Battleaxe maps have an admin spawn in at the planes and if everything is a go after 10 seconds or so they just suicide (have one do so on each side so both sides lose one ticket).

been there tried that for quake mods, i got no where with them.
-
What do you mean you got no where with them?
-
Not everyone will have the q4max mod.
13 people signed up for the q3 tournament, and maybe not all of those 13 people have quake 4. I'm not saying that we should use quake 3 because "I like it better", because actually I like quake 4 better. But what I'm saying is, not all 13 people may have quake 4.

Look.. we can discuss what isnt legal and is legal for the next week... but what it really comes down to, is the fact that these are guidelines... we cannot possibly come up with a rule to combat every possible situation someone may "cheat" in.
We post these rules so that the idea of what is acceptable and unacceptable is provided. That is always why it will be at our discretion whether or not to take action after reviewing an event that is brought to our attention.
Rather than nitpicking the rules, please just play ethically, and try to have fun. While we do have prizes... we aren't crowning a national champion and giving away a sports car or year supply of bananas.
:)
-
count me out of any tourneys if there is not a year supply of bananas.

The Quake tournament has officially been changed from Quake 3 to Quake 4, also Q4Max is now included. In addition, for UT2004 CTF, CTF-FaceClassic has been replaced with CTF-Grendelkeep.

Good news. If anyone needs Q4MAX and the custom maps, they can be downloaded from the link below.

Thank you for the link.... we are going to have to push this mod hard, as I suspect not many people have it.
This is the only mod we are running throughout the entire event... so I am concerned about its availability. We will host it on the patch server, so help us spread the word.

I thought UTComp was being used for UT2004? It's more of a mutator than a mod, but considered a mod none than less. UTComp for UT2004 and Q4Max for Quake 4 have the same purpose.
Which also brings me to this next question. Both UTComp and Q4Max has the options to set brightskins for your opponents and teammates, and set the team and enemy color of the brightskins. It also lets you set the teammate and enemy models. They allow you to adjust a few other things, like HUD setup and a few other things. These settings are competition legal at CPL, ESWC, WCG, etc.
Is any of this illegal at fites? (If so, then there is no point for using the mods then)
Edit : also take note, UTComp and Q4Max allow players to vote for maps and settings themselves. So there usually isn't need for an admin unless a techincal problem far beyond that sort of criteria.
