How will map selection work? The BF2 maps are the 16 player verisons, right? Do the BF tourneys have time limits? In the Quake tourney, is there a timit litmit and/or frag limit?
Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but you mentioned 'axis/allies' and 'Bocage' in the BF2 rules.
-
oh, thank you... will need to edit those.
Yes, the BF2 maps will be 16 player versions. Yes, there will be time limits in most tourneys, to avoid the hide and seek type of gameplay.
Quake tourney will be both time and frag limits.

where can i find de_cpl_strike

I don't want to sound like an ass, but I just wanted to point out a few things.
The UT2004 map names are all spelled incorrectly. I don't know if they are custom maps, or just incorrectly spelled.
Like, I can tell that 1-on-1 Refinery is 1-on-1 roughinery (its spelled roughinery in UT), but there was a map named "anken" in the map list. Maybe you guys meant "Rankin"?
Also, I have to ask something about the "cheating and fairness rule"
You guys say something about no cvar edits and what not. Yeah, that's understandable I guess (though, at competitive tournaments like CPL and WCG, they let you do whatever you want). But you guys say that the fov had to be default. Some people have probably been playing with 120 fov for years. It gives NO ADVANTAGE, it's just a preference. I'll be the first to say, I use default fov for ALL of my games so far. But some of the things you guys consider to be "cheating or not fair", could easily be considered a preference, not an advantage.
Again, I'm not being a prick. I just want to post constructively.
-
TF, i will certainly look into the map names.. I think we did that mostly from memory.
http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2004/maps.php
It seems that you are correct, and I will make the approppriate changes.
As for the FoV. Again, that is up to our discretion... please refer to my post in the other thread related to tournaments. We arent here to list every possible cheating scenerio.. just to give guidelines for what we look for in cheating.
If everyone plays ethically, we won't have a problem. And again, unless someone brings it to our attention, we won't be looking to "nail" anyone.

feel free to let me know if you see anything else that isn't as it should be.
Is de_cpl_strike not a default CS:S map?
-
No
-
are the rest of the maps standard maps? Perhaps that one snuck in there by mistake... I will have to edit it out.
-
the De_CPL ones are not standard.
IMO we should run Dust, Dust2, and Aztec as they are the most common straightforward competitive maps.
cs_Italy would be good also, which is a standard map.
-
Also along those lines 1:45 is awful quick for a CS match, its difficult to perform the objectives in that amount of time even before implementing strategy. I understand the need for quick round play but at least an extra minute or so would probably make the games less lopsided.
i.e. bomb maps where if the bomb is planted hardly has any time to detonate before the round timer ends the round, the bomb timers are at 30 seconds-ish. Its often difficult to even get to the bombsites in a minute.
3:00 to 3:30 would be perfect.

I'm not in the CSS tournament, but I will be the first to say that italy and dust are definitely NOT competitive.
Most competitive maps : Dust2, train, cbble, inferno, aztec, nuke.
If you were to throw a few of them out, I would throw out cbble and nuke, as they are a bit more CT sided than other maps.
-
Sorry to post so much, but I think the CSS tournament rules could use some tweaking. If I read correctly the aim is to play 15 rounds as each side. That is a long time. The old CAL and OGL rules were 12 rounds per side with greatest number of wins being the victor. Perhaps abbreviated CAL rules such as 6 rounds per side could expedite the tournament and allow for longer playing rounds. 6 rounds per side is enough time for a team to develop reasonable strategy and implement it.

Well, I've had a few friends that were in a few fites tournaments that were kicked out of the tournaments because of their configs. It's really not "unfair" at all. You can make a game look like quake 1 all you want, and it's legal everywhere. It's simply just a preference of how they would want things to look.
Actually, one of my friends got kicked out a fites tournament when someone said "Look at his screen, blah blah blah, I call bullcrap". Yet, he didn't get kicked out the tournament until the finals, when someone finally said something. :|
Some people that played quake 3 when it first came out didn't have great video cards to run it at a good fps. BUT, there is a command called r_mode that lets you make everything look really badly detailed, but gives you much fps. They have been playing that same way for years, even though they have a much better video card now. It's just their preference of fragging. I am actually kind of worried about the whole "play fair and no cheating" type of thing here, because I have a feeling someone will come up behind me, watch me play battlefield 2, and say "HEY! GRASS DOESN'T SHOW FOR HIM UNTIL HE IS 300 FEET AWAY FROM IT! CHEATER!" Yet, that's basically how the game runs at default, just a lower resolution.
Is there a restriction on resolutions as well? I want to know everything possible with no conflicts at all. I am a EXTREMELY competitive guy, I've won many tournaments before, and I just love tournaments. But I have this great fear that I will get disqualified out of a tournament for the littlest thing, like accidently turning something off that is graphical (weather effects, etc.)
Please don't think I'm being mean when I say this, but I seriously do think you should take your "cheating and fair play" thing a bit too far. At least be a little more lenient.
-
Italy and Dust are highly competitive, a bias toward one side's weapons may make it seem otherwise. Also keep in mind the teams will switch sides in the tournament, allowing equal access to map areas and weapons.
In other words, if you suck with the AK, tough noogies! :boxer:

I've played in CAL for 4 seasons, the highest most competitive league in North America. Not once, ever, have they used Dust or Italy. Dust and Italy are not highly competitive. Maybe for leagues for really bad teams is where they would use italy or dust.
Plus, playing 6v6 on Dust or Italy is just plain retarded.
-
Do you feel at a disadvantage playing as terrorist on Dust or CT on Italy?
I don't.
What is wrong with 6v6 on Dust? Dust2 is bigger. Both maps are fantastic.

No, I don't, and you're right.
Actually, it's so bad, that CT's should win every round on CT side.
Maps like Dust2, Train, and Inferno actually have a much better chance of winning rounds, no matter if you are a CT or T.

I wanted to wait to address this...
I fully understand where your concerns are coming from. And I fully admit that at our last lan, we were unprepared for what happened. We did not have rules in place to deal with the issue that arose.
I also did not handle it in the correct way, and I admitted that not only to the staff, but also to the player that was affected by how it was handled. I apologized to him after the lan, as I read more about what was going on.
Most lanparties (as far as I have researched) do not provide specific examples of what is right/wrong in "tweaking" games. We are doing this to try to avoid what happened at the last event.
I will admit, that we will be much more flexible in what we allow, but we need to have a broad ruleset that allows us to cover everything that may come up.
My best advice, is if you question whether or not something is illegal, please come talk to us at the LAN.
I do feel that what happened at the last event (in regards to the textures) was illegal, but again, I admit that it was not handled properly, nor were the gamers given a set of guidelines prior to the event.
So please bear with us as we try to find the right balance of rules/allowances.
Thanks :2thumbsup:
-
oh, one other point.
Please keep in mind that this event is supposed to be fun. There really aren't any bragging rights to come away from this lan, so those of you who are super competitive, keep in mind that 99% of the people attending are probably not nearly as competitive... and are simply looking for a good fun time.
They are not concerned with tweaking their games to get every FPS out of them... they are just looking to get in and play against live people in the same room.
If you go in lookign to demolish everyone in your path, you may lose sight of the true point in a lanparty... to have fun.
-
How does map selection work? Is it just up between the 2 teams to decide on one of the maps from the rules page?
-
I think we will do a rotation...
every bracket level will play the same map... it worked pretty well last time.
-
Yea that usually makes it easier for setting up the servers so there's less to worry about. If you know what the roration will be before the lan, please post it. Thanks!

Sweet Jesus, why CTF-FaceClassic for UT2004 finals? :|
That has to be one of the worst competitive tournament maps to date.

Glad to help! :2thumbsup:

so are we not using the de_cpl maps since that are not standard source maps.

I dont see them listed on the official tourney rules and regs .pdf file anymore. I hope not, I've never played them before

God Help Everyone if I end up into the finals. Ive been playing face classic forever since it was introduces in GOTY edition. That is gonna be one sniping :cussing:
FYI - played that map last night online.....26 headshots in my 79 frags
-
FaceClassic in the finals using Instagib is just wrong. Flag drops would be happening all over the place!
-

I agree, that tis why I would suggest a different map for the finals. Otherwise this will be more of a battle of who can snipe the best and may get pretty boring by one team who is getting blown out (always one team thats gonna pull away in this match by a long shot and another who will get massively freustrated because they can't get past the plain of there own base without getting sniped out
-
we'll consider modifying this.
-

WHOA, I THOUGHT THE CTF TOURNAMENT WAS REG WEAPONS. :|
tell me I'm right! There is no way it can be 6v6 instagib, unless you want every game to go into a 80 minute overtime.
Plus, here is something else to consider about taking face out of the finals.
Every spawn is in the BACK of the base. The back of the base has 2 weapons, a link gun and sniper rifle. Not only does a offense player have to battle his way through the base to grab the flag, but also has to make his way down the long run in the middle. During this time, if ANYONE dies on the opposing team, they spawn in the back of the base, grab a sniper rifle, and the flag runner will probably never succeed unless the other team are really bad snipers.
I've played quite a lot of UT2004 competitive CTF, and I know what the community competitive maps are. I suggest any of these for the finals: (I have included maps that were not already in the maplist)
Orbital2
Citadel
Smote
Orbital2 would probably be the best, because it is the biggest out of the 3. If not, then Citadel. If not, then Smote. These are just suggestions, take them if you want.
Also, one last thing about the UT2004 1vs1 Instagib tournament.
Why is Gael in the map list. I would rather play FaceClassic. Gael in Instagib is just a spawn rape fest. No strategy, just reflex and spawn rape. Instagib really has no strategy compared to reg weapons, but you are definitely putting instagib and the tournament on life support with Gael :| Definitely one of the most uncompetitive maps ever.
-
Actually, I remember the last 100-man LAN had this and it was pretty fun. I don't remember any matches lasting very far into overtime (in fact, I can only recall one overtime during that tournament).
-
Actually, if you look at the rules and regs... the DM tourney is Instagib. The CTF is regular weapons.
-
Okay, I just saw the finals as GrendelKeep. That was going to be my number one choice, as that is a spectacular map for finals.
Gael is still really bad though :/ It's way too small. WAY too small.
-
Fragile, one angle you may not be considering is a varied gameplay. By balancing a small map like Gael against a larger, shoot-and-run style map like Grendelkeep you bring out a wider range of skillset. Gael will test reaction time and aim, Grendelkeep more tactics.
If someone really is worthy of a first place finish they will be able to perform well on the balance of all the maps played.
Also, everyone plays the same maps so no one can claim they got a bad draw. Everyone plays the same maps, everyone deals with the same circumstances, everything is even.
Remember, have fun. We're not playing for several thousand dollars worth of prize money like at QuakeCon or CPL.

Gael isn't competitive, that's all.
I know this isn't CPL or quakecon, but I am competitive at every tournament, no matter what it is. I have plans for being a pro gamer one day, and I was basically pro in UT2004 (seriously). I've already made $1500 off of gaming, and I'm only 17, which I find pretty cool ;].
I love the competition and tournaments at lans. Gael just isn't very good for a competitive value. Better for instagib than reg weapons to say the least. It's easy to say that gael match-ups will end in 3 minutes, quite literally.
To put in simple terms, Gael is the FaceClassic of CTF. Oh well, should be interesting.
-
*sigh*
damnit, I bumped this crap!
-
:2thumbsup:
I second that, suggestions are great, whining about maps, not great.

Notice I said "Oh, should be interesting" at the end, because Gael is a random map to play, so it requires a different strategy. Yet, you are complaining about me when you are going to the same lan as me.
You don't say negative things like that about people when you are attending the same lan as them. I'm not saying I'm going to do anything about it, because I wont, but it's not very nice. :/
Sorry for offending anyone about my opinion on a map, sheesh. :/

I dunno, I always considered party to be associated with fun.
-
party - 1. a. A social gathering especially for pleasure or amusement: a cocktail party.
b. A group of people who have gathered to participate in an activity.
No mention of the word fun.
Dingleberry.
-
Amuesment - # a feeling of delight at being entertained
# entertainment: an activity that is diverting and that holds the attention
Pleasure - # a fundamental feeling that is hard to define but that people desire to experience; "he was tingling with pleasure"
# joy: something or someone that provides pleasure; a source of happiness; "a joy to behold"; "the pleasure of his company"; "the new car is a delight"
# a formal expression; "he serves at the pleasure of the President"
# an activity that affords enjoyment; "he puts duty before pleasure"
# sexual gratification; "he took his pleasure of her"
Fun - # activities that are enjoyable or amusing; "I do it for the fun of it"; "he is fun to have around"
# verbal wit or mockery (often at another's expense but not to be taken seriously); "he became a figure of fun"; "he said it in sport"
# violent and excited activity; "she asked for money and then the fun began"; "they began to fight like fun"
# playfulness: a disposition to find (or make) causes for amusement; "her playfulness surprised me"; "he was fun to be with"
# amusing: providing enjoyment; pleasantly entertaining; "an amusing speaker"; "a diverting story"; "a fun thing to do"
Looks like fun is related!

FITES events are always professional and run with a great, friendly, helpful staff. Not to mention all the cool people who come to game and have a great time. One of the biggest things that keep me (and probably others) coming back is the absolute coolness of the people. I've been to 4-5 FITES events and have never met a jerk, braggart (beyond anyone who just fragged Pride), or cheater. I'm proud to be a part of this organization and hope to help uphold its name at the 100ML.
Here's to a great LAN party guys!
Thank you to all who volunteer their time to make it all happen!

Dictionary.com did not use fun. Fun may be a synonym for some of those words but it was not used.
That's strike two.
-
And you trust the Internet? And only use one source?
Google: Define: fun (http://www.google.com/search?hs=B0o&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=define%3A+fun&btnG=Search)
There the word amusement is used. If that's not related (http://www.google.com/search?hs=d0o&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=define%3A+associated&btnG=Search) to fun or party then I have NO idea what language you speak.
Also, my first statement was of an opinion. Which I would have to say I have backed up with substance and you have given further proof on why they are associated in my mind.
Dictionary.com did not use fun. Fun may be a synonym for some of those words but it was not used.
I never said that the word is used to define or categorize the word party.
Since it was and is still an opinion, and choice words being synonymous with fun, you have just further backed up why I believe that they are related in the initial post. Your “arguments” have been nothing but fodder for my initial opinion. I will hold this opinion to be all mine and not claim it as a dictionary definition. It seems that you are trying to get me to change my opinion through week argument.
I have no idea, why my opinion needs to be in the dictionary or why I am even bothering to continue to post on the matter.
UNLESS!!!!
This was a psychological stunt to bring out competitiveness…… Or I am just over analyzing this… Well, If you really need the win on this one, I guess I could let you have it, but…… Nope.

Q4 is a PITA to set up on a server. Until our game server guy figures it out, no
It will only happen when there are dedicated servers at the lan for it. You cannot have players host their own servers. Because if the hosting player has a map that the joining player doesn't, he won't be able to join. Automatic downloading isnt' a feature in quake 4...yet. This is why the tournament was switched to quake 3 at the lan.
You couldn't join a server if you didn't have all the maps that the server had, but for tournaments like these, they would only put the maps that are in the maplist for the tournament. Plus, not many people had Q4Max at the time either.
