This is the rig that I am putting together right now. I will have it ready by the next LAN I hope.

4000+ socket 939 cpu
200gig sata harddrive
2gig ram(2X1gig,dual channel kit)
triton case with 500watt dual fan power supply
6800GT 256mb pci-e video card
Asus an8 deluxe -sli motherboard
16X dual layer dvd burner

I am not fully set on the processor. I may end up dropping a 4400+ dual core into it. But thats the last component I am going to pick up.

take a look at a better power supply for all that, everyone seems to overlook that good power (see antec, PCP&C, enermax, ocz) is essential to a good stable system. And I'd hate to see you have a PSU fry and take some of those nice components with it

512 isnt bad. it more of the specs that go along with it. just because you have a gig doesnt mean it will do anybetter then 512. you get what you pay for.

like me i bought Crap ram (was a comp n00b) with a computer that sits at

2.8 p4
512mbs pc3200 400 (generic)
ATI Radeon 9600PRO
P4P800 Deluxe

its a nice comp but... well when i tried better ram in it it was like a 100% proformance gain

the jump in performance from 512 to a gig is indeed dramatic. i got so much more out of my games when i went to a gig its not even funny... oh wait yes it is. hahaha

Then you get over two gigs and you are kicking your self in the pants for not getting ECC.

Also cuz on the dual core issue: They are more intended for serious multitaksing/content creation (where SMP is taken advanage of.) Games aren't written (yet) to utilize 2 processors, so you will only really get the full speed of one of the cores in current games, and probably most until the dual core chips become a common thing

tekieb: you can use it in mutliple applications however.

right now, what I like to do on my main gaming rig (which is HT (suedo dual proc)) is be burning a CD or doing a dell ipkvm connection on one monitor, and playing something like BF2 or UT2k4 on my main screen.

each one is allocated to a proc (logical proc or not) and memory from my 2gb pool, each runs wonderfully, and I cna game and burn at the same time

When you tried the other ram what make was it? ... I'm guessing you used another 512pc3200.

I'm debating running 512x2 corsair twinxp1024-3200c2 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80097-79 @ 2-3-3-6 in dual chanel OR 1x1gb corsair twinx1024-3200c2 in single channel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145504 @ 3-3-3-8......

... can't justify the $$$ for 2.5-3-3-6 timings which SHOULD be addressable via more voltage).

... dunno, but I'm leaning to the dual channel... spec better (according to corsair) AND they have they alpha-numeric display.

From what I've been reading the nf2 chipset may not be worth running in dual channel however... if I can save $50 and go w/the 1x1gb then I'll do that and pick up 5.1 headphones instead.... and try an overclock to compensate for the latency hit...... but the alphanumeric display...

If anybody else out there is running a nf2 rig, what have you found to be the best config?

(btw... STAPLES has a mail-in rebate for some pc2700 256mb Kingston @ $20 after rebates,.. good for your spare rig

The 512 seemed to be ok for the bf2 demo... but I dunno what's gonna happen when a bunch of stuff is on screen @ once. I forsee epic bf2 battles

for all the multitaksing I do 512 seems to be enough for most stuff, I can run all games I need to.

My tune will probably change once I get 1.25gb on the next rig i'm ordering (see powerbook)

Dont got money to add anything more, cuz summer school sucked 400 of my already draining bank account. So im done with gaming for awhile cuz i need to replace all 6 fans in the case. Cursed air compressor.

O and the MOBO is a gigabyte GA-something (they dont make it anymore or the dont support it on their site)
