Time for a new PC?
« on: October 25, 2008, 02:11:58 PM »
Whenever I am asked by someone if they should get a new computer I ask if they play games, if they don't a five year old 1.8GHz celeron will load windows, word, and a browser just fine.  I'm really having a hard time justifying the money to get a new one.  My current rig is in my sig,  I don't have any problems running anything now, and my only complaint is that the fans are loud.  The only reason I would get anything it to get a few more FPS and to satisfy my hunger as a hardware nut.

I was putting together a real sweet quad core with 8GB of ram and a new case.  Most of what I have now would be reused.  With water blocks for everything (Never going back to air cooling on my gaming gear) and top shelf quality gear I could have this machine for under $2k.  What are your thoughts, do it or save the cash?

Im in a similar situation i wanna build a new pc but mine is pretty good and I don't need a new one.  I think im going to wait for the next gen of Video cards and then i'll think about it.  maybe feb/march.

oh and the new air-coolers are damn near as effieceint as the water blocks and cost a lot less.

Yeah I could use those coolers for my 4870 cards. Can't believe it locked on my playing COD2 of all games, even with the fan speed set to 45%.

to be honest, since you are keeping your case and your PSU is still plenty fine, you could just replace your Mobo, CPU, and slap in 8gb of ram.

Leave the video cards alone or replace them with a single 4870 or 260 (depending on the mobo you get) leaving you the option of getting a second card in 6 mo time.

I dont' see why you couldn't upgrade those core components for < $1,000.

I plan to get a new case as well, I dunno if my PSU can handle a overclocked quad, the power consumption seems to increase geometrically when you start cranking up the speed.

No I am not kidding you. I have it set to 60& at the moment. And mind you this is on the stock cooler. The cooler is more then sufficient it is just when you first get it the fan speed is so damn low. When I first built it the cards were running at 79C. Until I did the fan mod then ATI finally put it in the CCC so now I can adjust it without having to edit my profile.
