Thumbdrive encryption
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:07:31 PM »
So I was thinking I'd like to put all the passwords for all my stuff on an encrypted thumbdrive and I was going to use truecrypt for the job, but I remembered that it got discontinued.

Do any of you have any worthwhile alternatives that you would recommend?

Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I'll +1 on the keepass.

If you want the old version of truecrypt before the questionable update and pulling I do have it for all OSes. (7.1a)

A buddy of mine that is big into cyber security said the latest round of TrueCrypt can still be trusted. A lot of teams have looked into it and achieved the same results. It can still secure data.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

I use LastPass personally, but I know KeePass is good too. I like that LastPass gives me access to my stuff no matter where I am and/or what device I'm using. Doesn't KeePass *have* to store the blob with all your keys locally, i.e., if you don't have that thumbdrive with you then you don't have access to your stuff?

As for TrueCrypt....yes it can still be safely used.

Disheartening, yes, but I'm not too concerned. I use a very strong (not used anywhere else) master password, I've always had 2-factor authentication turned on, have the number of rounds of PBKDF2 cranked way up, and I limit login to my account from only US based IP's. Yes, I'll change my master password, but I'm not overly worried.

Sorry for the late response. Was on vacation.

If you have a pro or enterprise version of Windows you can always use BitLocker as well.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.
