Title: Think Linux Desktops aren't pretty?
Post by: The Shoctor on June 22, 2006, 07:01:28 AM
A lot of the complaint I have heard from people have been the fact that the window managers are ugly and old looking... Well it must have been sometime since you have giving Linux a try. Also, I have the latest CVS build of Compiz running and you will be able to see it in action this weekend if you come to the LAN Party!!

Follow that link and check out the screenshots and video. The screen shots don't do it justice and working with it feels fairly natural!

That looks really good.  It is just gnome with a lot of effects, but it still looks awesome.  What distro did you get that running with?  I hope that you do not have to use suse to use it.  Now I really have to get linux going on my main computer again.

I am using kubuntu. and I have it working with KDE. :)
I really really really like it!
But it's not just effects it is a rendering engine...
It's a glx accelerated xserver. I find it is snappier and actually uses LESS CPU since it is using the 3d card.

I was going to mention that that would be sweet with kde!  I was just reading a little more about it and lots of people were saying that it was faster than normal xserver.  Was it hard to get running?  From my experiences anything with xserver is a pain.

Actually.... it wasn't that bad. The packages are right there and it took a little tweaking, but all in all, not bad. Though recently I have become farily intimate with xorg.conf and kdmrc. Those two files just love to be poked at.. Well, not really you can fsck things up if you don't know what you are doing.

I got it working on kubuntu, but I can't click on the kde bar at the bottom of the screen, so I think I have a lil more work to do :D

Seeing that in action was cool.  Now if only you could do the top and bottom of the cube.

It was alright.  Quite buggy though.
