The quakecon thread that isn't about rides and such
« on: March 22, 2005, 06:27:26 PM »
Okay, after the last thread there seems to be lots of interest in quakecon 2005. I figured I would make the FITES crew a lil primer/what we know and info and questions thread.

Here is what we know:

-Quakecon 2005 Will be held  Aug. 11-14, This is the biggest LAN party in the US. (for more info see the faq at http://www.quakecon.org/faq.php )

-It’s FREE!

-A bunch of us (me, sully, agent, firefly, and Nimby) went down last year and had loads of fun.
-We drove from PA, and met nimby and gunplay (one of his buddies) in Virginia

-It cost me around $500 for room and board (we split up the price of the room) Which in my opinion is WELL worth it.
-We all brought our own hardware and didn’t rent anything down there (you can rent monitors and such there)
-Food wasn’t that bad, we went offsite for pretty much everything, except the nVidia sponsored lunch.
-There is a mall near by, with lots of food and girls (ask gunplay and oncoming about that one) and a fry’s (Wal-Mart of computers) Both of these are within 10-20 min.
-It was one massive lan, 24/7, you name it they played it, from doom 1 to unreal 2k4.
-Sponsors gave away lots of stuff
-Hanging around with a bunch of people who share the same pashion as you do for a week, what more do you want?

any more questions or anything? Hopefully this will motivate sully to get a set list of people and such so we can get plans and rooms hammered out.

one more thing i forgot to add:

Quakecon is totally supported by volunteering, last year we went down early to set up, which IMO was the most fun I had all week. I'm assuming we are doing this again this year, so I encourage you all to volunteer too (it is fun) and help keep quakecon being the kickass lan it is!

The cost of the room was actually closer to $900~

it worked out to about $160 per person staying for the week.

after talking with tekie on irc, this has been straightened out, he had $500 for the trip, $160 of which was for the room, and the rest was food and stuff ...

my bad :)

oh it was, and actually I think my final total was lower than that, but still, well worth it (I have to factor in the excuse of buying a powerbook (and a job)this year though)

I'm going 90% for the experience.. the other 10% is the fun of a con.  I want to learn from the already pro gamers what it takes to get that far.  I got addicted to winning back at the 100m lan in dec and since then I've been quickly refining my q3 skills.  Now I'm fairly well placed and respected on ggl, though I have ALOT of room to go before I'm anywhere near a competitive threat to the REAL players (daler, chaoticz, etcz,.. and of course fatal1ty - a LONNNNG way off on that one)

But regardless, I'm gonna go, see what it's all about and get as much ass-whupping in as I possibly can (both giving and getting).

Oh if anyone ever wants to play me on q3, feel free to aim me at midpennmotor - make sure you have OSP and we'll play some 1v1 on a few low ping servers I know of.

tekie, edit your post, you put April 11-14 instead of August.

Garland, can't guarantee the same thing this year, but last year you got to go 1v1 with Fatal1ty at the Abit booth in Doom 3. You didn't have to beat him, just kill him once and you walked away with a nice prize. You still got a bag of goodies for trying, but you got a video card or a motherboard or something else from the Fatal1ty line of products that Abit makes if you got a kill on him.

The first day no one could do it. s2iBuu got close, getting him down to 6 hp left but then buu walked backwards off a cliff or bridge or something. I heard the second day he wasn't trying as hard and some people actually did kill him.

And yes, tekie I have already begun gathering info. I'll post it when I get it in a more complete form :2thumbsup:
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Speaking of gathering the info, could everyone who is considering going, please email me the following:

Name
Handle
Age
Comfort level of driving (both car and RV).

If you're 16 and just got your license, there's no way in hell you're driving an RV.

E-mail link is below ֿֿֿֿֿֿֿֿ↓
