Thanks for a good lan here is some feed back.
« on: February 25, 2013, 12:52:25 PM »
I wanted to say thanks again for a great weekend. Here is what i thought of the lan

- Artemis Rocks! - Your setup was fun and a great experience.

- Table 9 network sucked- I know there were issues at the beginning with the tf2 update but for our table they seemed to continue. With network drops in the beginning and major lag spikes during the TF2 6v6 that were not their for ulti duo tournament. It was near unplayable. I don't know if your cor switch was bogged but 2-3 seconds of pause during a lan tournament is very odd. It was happening to multiple people at the same table.

- I wish the information about the tournaments was given to the players earlier. I am new to TF2 competitive play and we were going to have a meeting about it at 1:30 on sat that never happened. We were informed about what we could use only a few min before we had to play.

-You guys always put on a great show and it the rest of it worked very well. I hope you continue to expand this. I will be back.

Quick Mt - Ryan

There were some individuals who decided to keep monkeying with the switch at table 9 and cause several issues. I am not going to call them out here, but suffice to say, expect zero tolerance of this in the future. Sorry for any issues this caused as we know it was more than most tables had to put up with.

As far as the general webs, I would like to thank our networking/web guys for doing what I consider a great job considering what was presented to us on short notice.

The only times anyone would "monkey" with the switch was when it dropped ALL traffic for them, NOT just the internet or inter-table but everything including same table CIFS transfers were cutting out. And that individual wasn't the only one affected by the intermittent disconnections, I had my system cut out multiple times, so did OP, and everyone at the table. The problem might have been a hardware/configuration issue in your switch, or maybe the 10+ year old geriatric switch had some other issue that caused it to have a mini-stroke and crap its pants every ~5 minutes.

Just curious but were you using the cable modem for DHCP?

On the subject of tournaments, I really don't think the group that is running the event should be playing in the tournaments. Seems kind of a conflict of interest in that you're team is organizing, judging, and scoring events that its capable of winning trophies and/or prizes from. Also, the tournament/competition information needs to be more visible. Try putting upcoming start times and the current time on a screen or a projection near the exit.

I can understand your statement about staff being tournaments having a conflict, but the truth is the points and scores are determined solely on the outcome of the game. The staff have no more say in any tournament than anyone else. Everyone is seeing the scores in real time and there is no way for staff to fudge with that.

If anything the no-trophy FITES staff have shown we would be the worst tourney riggers ever, if that were the case.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

Foray sorry for my confusion, but am thinking of the network table 9, not your table which was 9 on the seating diagram. Been sick since the event and forgot about them being different.

As far as judging, I believe case mod was the only one that would have been purely subjective based on staff and we excluded ourselves from that competition. Only one had manual scoring (Artemis) and our FITES team came in 3rd.

To be honest I thought the same thing about the bf3 tournament we ran.

I was worried there would be blowback or accusations that we picked a config and map rotation that was in our favor.  Or if there was an odd number of teams and one of us got the bye.  Or what would happen if someone died from that random "bad luck" crap.  Thankfully none of that ever came up.

even now, after winning that tournament, it doesn't have the same feel. I wonder if having our name on it AND having two teams caused people to look at it funny and not participate.

No, the cable modem was not doing DHCP. DHCP and DNS were handled by dedicated servers and those servers themselves worked flawlessly. When there were any DHCP problems it was either network related or something in the user's system. I helped one guy who had his system set to identify the network as "Public" in Win7. Once I changed that over to "Home" (or Work) he was on the net in a few seconds.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I thought about this myself which is why I decided to personally exclude myself from the League of Legends tournament. However, map rotation and server settings were posted a month in advance. This would give anyone fair amount of time to prepare if they were heart set on practicing for weeks on end just to win a trophy.

The only times anyone would "monkey" with the switch was when it dropped ALL traffic for them, NOT just the internet or inter-table but everything including same table CIFS transfers were cutting out. As far as the switch, regardless of it's state, it is property of FITES and as such should never be handled by attendees. As Broken previously stated, we will have a zero tolerance rule in effect for those messing with network equipment at future events. Your questions regarding DCHP would indicate that you nor non staff members have zero know how of how our network is configured and or ran. With that being said, any network related issues should be handled by a staff member and preferably one who is assigned to our network team.

To aleviate this problem you guys could have the switches in the back with runs for the PC's out to the tables to a couple of electrical boxes with keystones.

Right now the switches are at the tables with runs for two uplinks.  It sounds like alot of extra wire to run, but running 10 wires at a time isnt much different than running 2 wires at a time.  Just pull those badboys at the same time.  The pain would be punching them down individually at the tables.  Would hate to be the person who has that job.

We've got a plan in motion to prevent tampering of the network. Between that and due diligence from the staff we should have it covered.

The cost of that much extra cable... We haven't raised the price of the LAN for many years and don't want to start now. :(

On a side note, I honestly would rather punch down than crimp. ;)

Have no fear, they decided not to go with my plan to prevent tampering in favor of one more friendly to the public : )

Thats too bad.  I have a few thousand feet of cat5 here at work that absolutely nobody would miss if it disappeared.

And yea I agree, punching is way better than crimping.  I think I crimped two wires in college to pass a unit and never did it again.

Do you guys actually run new wires every year?  Surprised the hotel wouldnt let you throw that crap up in the ceiling.

For previous events, we had a trunk of cat5 which we would roll out to the tables. This is the first year we were able to make runs and leave them in the ceiling. Also crimping isnt as bad as it looks. After making a half dozen cables, I quickly became a crimping pro! lol
