Subtitles
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:33:58 PM »
This doesn't apply to just me as anyone could use this info for any personal project.

Okay, so I made a rip of my "The Protector" dvd (damn fine martial art flick, by the way) and I'm looking to edit/add subtitles. If I let Handbrake do it's own thing, I get the subtitles in the .mkv just fine EXCEPT I also get subs for the spoken English dialogue and.... despite the foreign (Thai) accents applied to them, I can understand them just fine. I'd rather not have to worry about turning subs on and off again for movies that have this "problem" (Kill Bill also comes to mind) and thus comes the question.

Does anyone know how I might add subtitles to a/the .mkv that show ONLY when the Thai/any other language is spoken? Finding subtitle (.srt) files is easy enough, but I'm not sure how I might apply only what I want. Should I delete out the text that I don't want (the English parts) and then hardcode the file/text into the .mkv? Also, how would I add said file in? I currently have mkvtoolnix 4.4.0 installed and the main window open, but I don't how to apply subtitle stuff and what else I've found via Google speaks of re-encoding files and such.

I'm a wee bit lost and uneducated on this one.

Your subtitle file is just a text file with time codes.
You can delete out the parts you don't want and remux the file back in... You could even remux under a different language code.
