Statement regarding SC2 and BC2 at the 200 Man LAN
« on: October 28, 2010, 09:20:22 AM »
There has been a lot of discussion regarding the ability to play StarCraft 2 and Bad Company 2 at the upcoming 200 Man LAN. While FITES is a fan of both of those games, due to the lack of LAN support for either title, we are unable to host official tourneys for those games.

We will, however, be more than happy to announce pickup games as interest arises but we cannot guarantee the connection between our network and the interwebs will be able to effectively maintain a playable level. While we have epic interweb pipes at the LAN thanks to Comcast, there are 200 people using them for everything from Chatroulette to WoW to Torrents. If you require proof regarding how heavily our intertubes are used at a large LAN, please see one of the several forum threads.

To summarize, we will NOT be offering tourneys for PC games with no LAN support but are happy to announce pickup games.

Can we like... storm the DICE and Blizzard offices with pitchforks and torches and demand results? Results that actually end in gamers being the ones who win instead of being the ones that get a taser to the face?

Though we cannot officially condone that behavior, we're also not going to stop you from doing so.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

The lack of LAN functionality in most newer games really does break my heart. If this keeps up, nobody will even come to LAN parties anymore because they'll be forced to play ancient games.  :frown:

While I'd be perfectly content playing UT2k4, Battlefield 2, CoD4, and the original Starcraft at every LAN for the rest of my life, I don't think others will feel the same way. Hey, there's an idea though, let's have a Broodwar tournament in lieu of a Starcraft 2 tournament! I'm absolutely horrible at broodwar, but I'd play it just for fun.

Yeah, and those people freak out when you suddenly say you're changing the match rules at the very last second. :-D

It's kind of like the death of PC gaming. PC gaming is dieing, don'tcha know? The future is console gaming and only console gaming.

....or not. You just gotta look in the right places for the right thing.

We do. It's not a complete free for all.

But in reference to BC2. The thing is we would want to provide an exceptional experience. And we just cannot guarantee the pipe.

Officialy, no.  We do NOT condone torrenting using our interwebs and a filter may be used to stop such activity.

EDIT: What The Shoctor said.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

Understandable, it is sad that some new games require the use of their online servers exclusively. Is the circuit just for the lan or are you using the hotels.

It's just for us!
We won't stop people from playing BC2. The problem with a tournament is we can't guarantee a fair fight. Prevent drops... etc.
BUT, Like what was mentioned before if there is enough interest in a friendly tourney amongst people we have NO problem setting up a bracket for you. And I\we wouldn't mind making announcements for it. And the system allows us to let the organizer have control over that event.
