Shout out to all the Dreamweaver users here at FITES

Since Pride posted on the EB/GameStop merger I thought I'd try to get some opinions from everyone on the recent announcement that Adobe is buying Macromedia.   Does anyone here use Dreamweaver or GoLive?

I'm a die hard Dreamweaver fan, they finally marriaged products together to design websites and took off where FrontPage stopped.  Adobe tried to get into the Web design business with GoLive but I fealt it was too bulky and "photoshopesque" instead of a web product.

So now I read on comcast's page that Adobe is buying out Macromedia.  I'm kinda pissed because with any merger the dominating company always tries to change the product line of their new aquisition to get some rapid rate of return on investment.

Anyone use PestPatrol Enterprise edition?  You'll see my point :)  (actually :( cause PPEnterprise is a sack of crap now thanks to CA but that's a diff story).

I just hope Adobe uses their head and realizes that Macromedia has a far superior product when it comes to web design and I hope they don't do the wrong thing and "gobble up the competition" just to get a foothold on the market. :bigcry:

Thanks for bringing this up...

I feel this merger can go 1 of two ways.

I like Macromedia.  Their products are innovative and user friendly.  I don't care so much for Adobe, as they are still married to the Mac feel.  Sure, I have adjusted to Photoshop, but all of their programs derive from the Mac OS, and not Windows/PC.

I use Dreamweaver for this site, and will continue to do so.  I am hoping they take the best of both companies, merge the good parts, and drop the bad parts.

Good post!

For coding a dynamic site nothing beats Dreamweaver.  If you want php with mysql or ASP with vbscript Dreamweaver takes a lot of the manual db coding and does it all for you.  Saves a Crap load of time in the long and they are pretty good with reusing code.    My only gripe is the advance SQL function for mysql.  It's not advanced at all, you just have to type everything in by hand.

Front page is a great tool for beginners because it has a low learning curve but the features are not up to par as a GoLive or Dreamweaver.  It's also geared toward servers with front page extensions (proprietary) and the others are more "open" to all technologies.

I used FrontPage when I started to outgrow notepad way back in the day. But after a friend introduced me to Dreamweaver (version 3 at the time), I never turned back. I tried using GoLive once just for comparison, but it was no contest. Dreamweaver just does everything you need it to and if it doesn't the ability to add extensions created by other Dreamweaver users is a great asset.

I like Photoshop over FireWorks though. Adobe has nothing to compare to Flash, Macromedia has nothing to compare to AfterEffects or Premiere. So while there is some overlap in the flagship products, there are quite a few areas that are different.

Do I think this is a good idea? I don't know. Competition is what drives better products. The companies say they fear competition from Microsoft, but MS doesn't really make any products that compete directly with Adobe or Macromedia, so what's the incentive?
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
