RTS games at the 150ml !!!11one
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:31:56 AM »
It must happen. It must.

At the last 150ml, 8 of us got together and had some -great- games of C&C: Generals Zero-Hour. I'd love to see it happen again this year. If you'd like to get in on the action (Even if you don't have a copy of the game), let me know!

Other RTS games available for Lan Play  :box2:
  • C&C: Red Alert 2
  • C&C: Tiberian Sun
  • C&C 3 (perhaps)
  • Star Trek Armada II
  • Age of Empires II
  • Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds <--this would ROCK! Great game!
  • I may have others..

So, what we`ll do is get a list of who all wants to play and exchange seat numbers for easy communication. Get together and enoy some RTS fun.

Whatcha say?

I have had a lot of fun with Supreme Commander recently. Reminds me of the good ol' TA days.

Yeah I saw ya playing it on Xfire. I`ll have to look up some info on it. Is it more tactical than graphical? If that makes sense.

I honestly didn't like Supreme Commander. That being said, my fav RTS(and consequently, the ONLY RTS I am actually good at) is Total Annihilation.

I think it was mostly the camera angles and controls really annoyed me in SupCom. It was a major frustration to play.

Having some RTS games going at the 150 would be good though.

To bolster support for RTS games at the 150ml, I have taken the time to create this ever so crappy animated gif banner using MS paint and some freeware prog I googled up. I know..yer all awestruck. Anywho! Fellow RTS'ers! Add this banner to your signature to help recruit the masses!

SC FTW...I also am game for some C&C Zero Hour. I'm not a fan of C&C 3 (in fact I refuse to buy it) until they fix the gameplay. It's not well balanced at all. Anyways, SC would be sweet (I don't mind the camera angles...but it def could of been better...If you don't have a scroll mouse to zoom in and out really quickly..you would never be able to play)

Guys, let me level with you, RTS is my favorite type of game, i would LOVE ... LOVE to make an RTS tourney at the next big lan, but there is one major problem... time... these games take forever if we have only 10 people sign up, we could still be going at it all night, one game alone could last 4 hours.

propose me solutions!

i was thinking starcraft for some old-school fun... and also because you can make a starcraft game end in 30 min if your good.

Well. I know a tourney would be a major undertaking for that very reason. Time. A few things come to mind:

1) I remember the CS:S Tourney at the 100 man lan (the one a couple years ago) took for-evah` to complete somewhat like 4 hours, but I recall it being much faster at the 150 man lan a few months later. No, im not saying it was handled wrong. I hadda blast! But perhaps just block out a 4 hr time slot for it. Perhaps teams of 2 and then a big game of the final 3 or 4 teams (for a 6 or 8 person game) for the finale. Multiple fronts in an RTS are fun! :) ha.

2) Announce or schedule some RTS free play time. Doesn't have to be a tourney. Just something somewhat structured (in the sense that it has a time slot, some face time on the intranet/schedule, and a few mic announcements [big thanks to Pride who -did- do mic announcements for me at the 150ml])

3) Perhaps a sign up section on the intranet even if its just free play. Something so we can contact others who are interested in playing but may not being their CDs to the lan. Last year I hadda decent number of people interested in playing but:

:furious: "Dude!!1 I didn't know we were playing RTS`s or I would'a brought my CDs!!"  :cussing:

Bascially, I'd just like to see the word get out there (<<cough>>Add the annoying sig, folks!<</cough>>) so people know RTSs -are- going to be played at the lan, so bring yer cds! :) Its an entire genere of lan games that more often than not fall by the wayside. At a large, very well organized event like this, the low ping of the servers is an RTS gamer's wet dream.

So how `bout it Fites staff? Maybe a little announcement(s) somewhere about RTS games being played? An intranet section to sign up for free play (or a small tourney if its possible)? I`ll nominate myself RTS coordinator and propaganda spreader if it`ll help!  :2thumbsup:

I'm not an RTS fan but I know what it's like to want to play a favorite game at the LAN but not having others want to. Maybe an idea for the tournament would be to set up big restrictions to make the games go quickly such as who has the most units after a certain period of time. I don't know enough about these games though to know what rules can be set up. I'm sure something can be worked out that's fair and doesn't take up the majority of time during the weekend.

I thank you for your input even though this kinda game isn't your cup-o-tea. Some restrictions can be made when the game is started such as

  • MCV/Construction yards do not repack
  • No crates
  • Dont have to kill EVERY unit to be considered the winner (some folks`ll hide a single soldier on the map.. blah
  • Start with max available cash

That`ll shorten a game in most circumstances. Of course that's if a tourney is an option. As stated earlier, just a semi-highly publicized Free Play session would get me all happy.
