QuakeCon not in Texas?!?!?
« on: February 27, 2006, 10:11:07 PM »
Of course nothing is final until the final revision, and that's subject to review, but......

From an interview with Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id, QuakeCon is almost certainly going to see a change of venue this year from the Gaylord Resort in Grapevine, and possible even moving outside of Texas! Excerpt below.

Quote from: "http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=32219"

WP: Although it is still a ways off, have you made any special plans or events for QuakeCon 2006?

TH: Marty Statton (id Software Director of Business Development) is working hard on that right now. We're almost certain that the venue for QuakeCon 2006 will change, which presents us with a bunch of challenges. Some of what we can do is always subject to the constraints of the venue for the event and until all of that is finalized, it's really tough to make definite plans. The sponsors are enthusiastic, and I know the fans are looking forward to it, so we have some ideas about making QC06 a special one by building on everything that worked well last year and mixing in some new stuff, too. Of course the LAN party and tournament will be the focus of the event, but as anyone who's been to QuakeCon can attest, there's more to it than that. There's still a possibility we may move QuakeCon outside of Texas (!) for this year. And before I get crushed by email, even if it's not in Dallas, it will stay in the U.S.

Hey, maybe they'll move it to the Baltimore/DC area and we can all crash at Shado's place!   :badboy:
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I saw that too, if you head over to the quakecon forum there is a huge discussion about it. I just hope it's closer to PA

They should try to centralize it as much as possible.  Also keep it near a major airport hub.  Kansas City perhaps?

Yeah I read through all 12 pages (12 as of the time I read them, probably more now) of that discussion. There were some pretty sensible speculations (I say sensible and not valid because they came from noone official) about Houston, Chicago, Kansas, Austin, and Las Vegas. If it's Vegas, that means airfare. I don't mind driving, but Vegas would just be too damn far for the amount of time we'd be there. Yahoo is saying it would be 2400 miles, 36 hours (not including stops of course, so more like 48 probably). Although the route does go through Colorado and I've always wanted to drive through the Rockies.....

Anyways, back to reality. As I said at the beginning, nothing's final until the final revision, and that's subject to review. So we'll know when the Quake gods speak and until then just hope it's further east than west.

first off, unless you've got a car you trust (read: NOT a suzuki ;) ) driving through the rockies is a bitch

second: it'll be nice to know when the next QC is, so I can plan a nice trip to the beach right around the same time

No, never taking the Suzuki anywhere out of state again. We rented a van last year since there were 6 of us driving, but if there's only 4, I rented an Impala for a recent road trip and it was freaking sweet. That would be my choice personally.

And is that beach comment a hint? Do you have some insider info you're not telling us?

That would be awesome! But, you know if they hold it in Baltimore, I have to see if any of my contacts at the inner harbor Marriot still work in sales... Then I could see about hooking us up cheap at a hotel right across the street from the convention center... Cause that's where I park anyway when going there. I miss the days of free parking...
