Does anyone have a PS3? If so, what connections are you using (Component, HDMI)? What are your overall thoughts on the picture quality of Blueray compared to regular DVD?
-
I don't own one, but I can tell you that there is a DEFINATE difference in quality. BluRay I believe can run up to 1080p which yields beautiful, clear images/movies. Once you go HiDef, you'll never go back.
-
Once you go HiDef you wallet is empty.
EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention that I have the LG Super Blue Player that plays both BluRay and HD DVDs. Sad thing is that there really hasn't been anything worth buying lately.
-
anything to add on HDMI vs. RGB Component? Thing is that I already have RGB component cables from a PS2. Turns out they work for PS3 as well.
-
HDMI can do 1080p where you can only do 1080i over component.
-
i just traded my Paintball gun for a PS3. I'll let you know of my first time out of the box experience when I get it (games are crazy expensive though...Man I just blew 60 bucks on Ratchet and Clank)
-
If your ps3 has hdmi use it. Some TV's offer 1080p over component but i guess you just have to check. I also think tht to do 1080p over componnt you need to keep the length of cable to under 1 meter. google it and you'll get some info. I think the westy lvm42 does 1080p over component.
-
I have that TV, I forgot to mention that most LCD TV's only do progressive anyway. Just they way they are built. But you will only get 1080p on BluRay or HD DVD over HDMI because of HDCP.
-
Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I believe component uses analog signals, whereas HDMI stays digital from source to TV. Component would have to be converted from the digital on the BD to analog to travel over the component cables. HDMI is digital to digital with no conversion and no quality loss along the way.

The problem I encountered with hdmi and the reason I don't use it on my xbox 360 is (and it may be different on the ps...when you use hdmi your video and sound go through the hdmi cable right to your tv. I use a 5.1 surround system connected to a 4 port switch via optical cable. I had assumed that I could run the hdmi cable to my hdtv and use the TVs optical output to the surround system. The problem is the TV optical out only puts out stereo unless you are watching a broadcast over the tv tuner. So to get full 5.1 sound I have to use the 3 component cables and the optical out to my switch for sound. On the 360 you cannot use the optical out and the hdmi cable, it may be different with the ps I don't know, just throwing it out there.

That blows, I always thought you could use both....doesn't matter for me though as I do not have the HDMI version of the 360. I do think the PS3 has a seperate and built-in optical output. I'm not sure whether the optical output gets canceled when you use HDMI though.
Update: I have read on a few different websites that you CAN use BOTH at the same time. You just have to adjust some settings in the PS3. Just set the video to HDMI and the audio to Optical.
-
on the hdmi version of the 360 they put the hdmi port in a place so that the larger component plug (which has the optical port) covers the hdmi port.

Sweet! I didn't know they existed. But I am already setup with component, and my tv only goes to 1080i.

Since I'm still living in an HD challenged household (aka, old POS TV), I would be ok if I had a receiver with HDMI connections on it, correct? Then the audio and video can both travel over HDMI to the receiver, the receiver passes the video along to the TV and the audio out to the speakers. Am I correct?
I thought the idea of having one cable for everything was supposed to make it simpler? Sheesh...

Yes, as long as it's HDMI 1.2 compatible.
