So this is a pretty badass game and I've been playing it since beta. If you liked Battlefield 3 you'll like this game. The gameplay is rather similar. Just think of a BF3 map x 100, and them multiply that by 3 for each continent. Its completely F2P which is pretty awesome. You can spend real mondy on "station cash" which from what I understand you can use to buy specific things/weapons/upgrades or on certs, which are in turn used to purchase things. You can choose to do this or earn certs in game.
The goal is to control the map. You do this by taking over stations. You take over stations by capturing AND then holding the point until the enemy's influence is depleted and yours is maxed. It can take some time. So not only do you have to capture a base, but maintaining it can be a task as well.
In game chat was working in beta, but it might be a little broken at the moment. There is a proximity chat as well as squad chat. Prox chat is very helpful when calling out for a medic or engineer.
The game can have a steep learning curve at first. I think it took me a good month or so to really get all the specifics worked out while playing the beta and even, while I have a good grasp on the game, there is still alot of stuff I'm unsure of. But if anyone has any questions I'll try to offer as much information as possible.
Currently there is not a way to switch factions or move your character to a new server once created. There has been talk of allowing this in the future. My bet is that it will be another micro transaction. We play as Vanu on the Jaeger server.

Well, F2P, feck yeah I'll get in on that!
-
I have a few friends who worked on the game. It looks gorgeous, and I give them lots of praise for that. Their engine is really damn pretty (I loves me some deferred rendering). I loved the original Planetside and having played a substantial amount of the beta, I have enjoyed it immensely. Worth playing!
-
Well, F2P, feck yeah I'll get in on that!
Yea and its not PAY TO WIN like some other F2P games seem to be heading. The only thing you pay for is to unlock the same upgrades/weapons/etc that you would otherwise get for free over time.
-
I have been playing this game A LOT lately. I think it's better than BF3 as far as scale and real feel of battle is concerned. Gaining certs is one hell of a grind! But it is worth it. It takes a significant amount of coordination to take over larger assets (Biodomes are pretty friggin' hard to overtake due to it's sheer size!).
And it does look pretty good considering it is running in DX9.
There are multiple training videos on the website and the client front end to get you started. It was pretty hard to learn at first and I had no clue what to do or where to go in the first hour or so of playing. After a while you get the hang of it though.
-
How many people can play on a map or server at any given time? I might look at this, but I'm pretty big on team size.
-
I think it's in the hundreds.
-
Yea the team sizes are huge. I was in a squad with ogar and we couldn't find one another because we were on differnet continents.
-
This is the level of play we need to get FITES up to: http://youtu.be/x2c-olKtgKU (http://youtu.be/x2c-olKtgKU)
A 2 squad FITES armored column? Or how about a FITES flying squadron? These guys are form Outfit-X on a different server a friend of mine plays on.
-
I got my FPS problem fixed and can now at least be a productive member of the squad.
-
Between this, diaspora, and Star Citizen, I'm in the market for a joystick. If anyone finds a good deal on one, let me know.
-
Maybe anyone who wants to join us should list their character names/server/faction here. Right now we are all Venu and are on the Jaeger server. Sorry if I spelled those wrong...correct me me if possible.

Had a good time playing this last night with Mahoney. Definitely has the feel of a huge battle space. I will be on again tonight!
-
Dave - Sent you a friend request in game.
I will be on tonight (hoping to be on by 6pm at the latest). Got on at 9 last night and we managed to boot both factions back to their gateways on the continent. I am digging the heavy assault class and am going to work on specializing that.

Im on 12's right now so i wont be playing till friday night!

I've been eyeballing that set for a while, but I've never had the cash to splurge. Maybe after the holidays.
-
Updated the OP adding in everyones soldier names to the list that was there.
I should be on sometime after xmas playing this. A few of us vG peoples have it and really like it so maybe a PS2 night will eventually be in order!

Thought about building a custom computer desk with some funds I've acquired but this is a little more interesting.
-
So...Planetside 2 Friday night 9pm?
-
that works
-
I'll have to see when I get home. Date night tonight and it's not with you guys. ;)
-
Count me in for 9.
-
I should be on for this.

DOUBLE XP WEEKEND!!!!

I'll try to make it on tonite as well.

Station Name - tokincurse
-
I'll see what's going down :)
my steam name is doublegmaniac{at}yahoo.com (yeah mine's old as hell with an e-mail.)
station name DoubleGManiac
-
We need character names not your SoE names.
-
Owen is KickButtz
-
Sent a friend request to KickButtz.
Curse's name didnt work for me but I know the add feature can be buggy. Will try again tonight.
-
Cursed gave his Station name, which is not his in game name. Cursed is actually : Cursedesever (or maybe with two d's, but I'm sure it's just one.)
One thing we learned the other night is that it gets to be a lot more fun if you move to a different battlefield when one appers to be gridlocked with no discernible outcome. Also, flight sticks are on the way. I'll be spending some certs on making a gunship soon enough.
-
My sticks arrive tomorrow! I've watched some videos online about PS2 specific flight stuff. Informative.
-
Mine came in today. Apparently I live really close to an Amazon distribution center...
-
There's an AZ center in Carlisle, also could have been a 3rd party shipment from Ingram Micro in Jonestown or D&H in Harrisburg.
-
They shipped from Harrisburg, or at least, that was the first location on the tracking info. Either way, I like!
-
Wait, I have a shipping center in my little town? Dafuq? I smell a raid coming.
-
I will be on for some more PS2 tonight. Feel free to hop in TS.
-
2 gig update came down today. Grab it early.
-
Fk... at work : /
-
In the spirit of giving a big FU to blue, I started building out my AA Max. My next 500 certs are going to the extended mags as it seems you can only get their fighters down to about 85% on one set of full mags. Hit lvl 25 last night.
Scary encounter of the weekend... a lvl 75 Dual Shotgun Max on Amerish.
-
We need to get Kaiser into this game. He goes nuts in BF2.
-
I get the feeling people have been taking a break from the game, which is good. It's those nights where we have a lot of people working together that are awesome.
My flying still sucks.
-
If you havent already done so, check your joy stick sensitivity, make sure its all the way down (left). Also make sure your dead zone is as small as possible. I changed those and It helped my flying a lot.
-
Broken, did you set that in game or in widows?
-
In Game under settings. Two different slider bars. Make sure to read the mouseover tips carefully as it can be confusing as to going which direction does what.

Maybe this will help...
Quotes from the Fifth Element (movie the above image is from)
Flight Attendant: Mr. Rhod, you are going to have to assume your individual position.
Ruby Rhod: I don't want one position, I want all positions!

Just watched Fifth Element (in its entirety for the first time!) a couple weeks ago. I get it now!

Triple! that is like 3 times as much! o.O
-
I'm going to post this elseware too but we're hoping for a giant Planetside 2 turnout this Friday night at 9pm on our Teamspeak. Fire up your game early and update it. Also add as many people to your friends like as you can.
Server: Jaeger
Faction: Vanu

If it doesn't fit, you must use Lube!
I talked the GF into downloading the game last night. I said the magic words "Free to play." This will be interesting as her only FPS experience is screaming and running away from spiders...
-
This could be the best ever. If we get enough people we should run two squads so we have two squad leaders to spawn in on, way points, attack squad and defend squad.
-

Oh I am down for this Friday!
-
I can run the second squad if you would like. I have a few unlocks in my squad leader setup including squad spawn point.
-
I made rank 34. Should be able to hit 35 before tonight if I get out early enough.
-
Wanted to mention this to you Friday Night Mahoney regarding the Thanatos Shottie. I use it for CQC no slugs and aim for the head. It is devastating. If you go body/crotch shots it takes way too many hits, but if you aim high it destroys them. I might throw a laser on it to see if it makes firing from the hip worth it. I am just not looking forward to having to remeber to turn the laser off like our damn headlights.
I have heard a few guys say they use it with slugs and put a 4x scope on it for medium sniping but I havent tried it.
-
Bringing this one back.
I'm thinking of dropping BF3 for this. Quite honestly (at the risk of sounding like an arrogant douche) BF3 has become... too easy. We should probably be playing competitively at this point but none of us really have the desire to do that. To me its a game... not a job.
Just about everything from Planetside 2 carriers over from BF3. The gameplay is near identical. The scale though is what we're looking for. Now, I understand 6-8 of us cant defend an entire facility by ourselves against a zerg but the idea of trying, at least, sounds fun. The sheer numbers game will offer us a much better challange.
So I loaded the game up last night for the first time in a few months and two things bothered me:
First being the framerate. I cant seem to get over 35fps while in a fight. i7 920/GTX570/6GB RAM. This really isnt playable like this at all. Does anyone else have this problem?
Second being no toggle zoom. Its very uncomfortable for me to have to hold down the right mouse button while at the same time burst firing with the left. I think it causes me to grip the mouse tighter making it slightly more difficult to move it and aim fluidly. I read online it can be enabled, but I dont see it anywhere in the options. I'm not blind am I?
Other than that.... anyone up for playing?
-
There is a toggle zoom... but you have to edit one of the cfg's or ini's. Google it...it's out there somewhere. To get a better FPS you have to tone down the draw distance. It's in the same ini or cfg...again google is how I found it.
EDIT: Found this
You may have already done this, but you can manually change your draw distance via your useroptions.ini file found within your PS2 directory folder (steam).
Maximum distance, afaik, is =3000, all depends on your PC's capabilities.
EDIT2: The zoom toggle is also in that file:
[General]
AutoDetectPerformanceSettings=0
ZoomToggle=1
MouseSensitivity=0.410000
InvertVerticalLook=1
InvertVerticalFly=1
ReduceInputLag=1
FixedMinimap=0
Profanity=0
-
I modified the ini for draw distance and it didnt help much. I think it got me up to about 40fps.
I'm gonna look for the toggle zoom though ini fix. This should help ALOT.
-
Czar definitely had a frame rate issue that he fixed with the method described by Decepticon. Essentially you need to modify one little line that describes how far out you start rendering objects. They are in a period of serious patching lately, though so your issue may be fixed on its own. There is only one real downside, high air bombardment with the Liberator's massive cannon. Typically tanks and sundy's (That you are hunting after in that loadout) render before infantry. Just don't set it too low to avoid not seeing the tanks from a safe vantage.

flippin sweet. I set Profanity to 1 :D
Fixed Minimap=0 i assume has your guy fixed and the map rotates like BF does correct? The fixed minimap always disorients me.
Thanks man!
So what frames are you guys running at with your video cards and draw distance?
GTX570 - draw distance 1000 -40fps ish.
EDIT:
Just loaded up the game again and during firefights im around 50-55. Much better. Toggle zoom helps alot as well. Thanks!
-
I assume you guys also changed VerticalFOV to 90 right? Default is 55 and it feels like terrible tunnel vision.
-
So after editing my settings in the INI last night I was ready to go but found my framerate still limited to < 30fps when in a populated area.
After reading around I found that the entire game runs on 2 threads. I verified this crudely by watching cpu utlization on the process and sure enough it never used more than 25% of my cpu. On my quad core i7 930 with 8 available cores 25% would be 2 threads.
This is very disheartening. I was skeptical about the draw distance setting because no matter what resolution or graphics settings I used I never saw an increase in frames. So the only way to increase framerates would be to increase the clock speed of my cpu. I'm not going to start overclocking simply for one game.
This sucks because its a pretty fun game. While I might be able to live with the game in its current state, I dont think it will gain any overall support from us as a whole. I'm no programmer but I dont think something like this can be fixed by patching.
I had alot of fun last night playing in a 3 squad platoon running around capturing facilities. :(
-
Damn... that's hard to take in, but thanks for the updates krakah.
I'm installed and ready to give PS2 a real shot... add: shankdog10
EDIT: added in-game handle for adding to friends list

You guys are going to pull me away from Mech Warrior and back int Planet Side o.O
-
I know the server most of us were playing on "Jaeger" was merged with another. It's a US East cost server called "Watterson".
-
^Yep thats where we got moved. I was worried that we would somehow get split up. Glad to see everyone is on the same server at least.
-
Damn... that's hard to take in, but thanks for the updates krakah.

We can try, but you know we have some framerate diva's in our group who arent satisfied unless they're running over 100fps all the time.
Its too bad too. Its alot of fun. But if there is ONE thing I learned last night its that you absolutely CANNOT trust the guy on your flank.
-
Has me curious what my frame rate is. I never checked it with my setup.
-

At the warp gate you can probably get a decent framerate. I get anywhere from 80-100fps at the warp gate. But once in action it goes down the crapper.

Very good to know, thanks Mahoney, will make my guy on the Watterson server tonight.

I used to be all about graphics, but now I admit I'm a framerate diva as you so eloquently put krakah, gotta get dem FRAMESSS (I blame gri3v for this!) -- will report back with how PS2 runs for me, especially before/after tweaking ini files etc.

It seems I got back into this game with the worst timing.
https://twitter.com/mhigby/status/313867312006574080 (https://twitter.com/mhigby/status/313867312006574080)
All my fuss the past couple of days has been due to a bug in a recent update. I copied Broken's ini settings and loaded up the game to see that there was a ~34MB patch. Not sure if this is the patch referenced in the tweet or not but framerates were better for me. Still not near 70fps in heavy action. Maybe our definitions of heavy action is different? I'm talking about a full on zerg vs zerg. I wasnt able to get a full zerg on zerg tonight but did see some decent action (video coming later) and my frames were around 50ish, which is do-able for me.
Assuming it was the patch that fixed it perhaps I can lower some of the ini settings a little more and squeeze some more frames.
EDIT:
http://youtu.be/pDVHorjnvDc (http://youtu.be/pDVHorjnvDc)
We ended losing the facility. You can tell I'm not used to the weapon orders. I kept getting mixed up between guns while switching between them.
-
What happened last night Krakah? I couldn't hear much due to all the explosions and fire inside the bio lab so not sure if you were trying to talk towards the end of the fire fight. The last time I saw you, you were going off the one landing pad just before I crashed a galaxy into all those door campers.
-
zerg on zerg is hard depending on how much map control is happening. You can only get main battle tanks if you control certain facilities, otherwise you can only get them from your warp gate. Most players are reluctant to fall back that far, but that's what good team coordination can provide. If you fall back for a good range of armor and air support you can make a good counter to a zerg rush.
-
I fell back for a Galaxy to crash into campers on the platform. After I couldnt revive Krakah or get him on the com, I logged and went back to MWO : )

I died and said it was a good time to go make a drink. Then the g/f started chatting my ear off. I couldnt get away. Came back down 10 minutes later and you were on MWO :(
-
Let me know when you guys want to do it again. I am always up for some Planetside.
-
Getting a platoon together that consists of a vG squad and a FITES squad would be pretty awesome.
I've been watching videos on how to efficiently take stations and theres so much to know. Its like each facility is 2 Battlefield maps.
-
3 if you count the idiots spawning on the sunderer that is nowhere near a facility/base access point.
-
There are different key areas to focus on with each facility. For instance, one squad can be set to guard a particualar shield generator, while another one is out hunting for sundies and spawn beacons. Or if attacking you might find better luck by first attacking their armor generators so they can' spawn tanks, and then holding a forward spawn area.
Lots to consider.
-
Also consider not going anywhere near a point held by 3 dual shottie Maxes unless you have a Magrider or a Liberator to back you up.
-
The toughest part of PS2 is coordinating a good use of infantry, armor, and air support. The scale is so massive it's hard to actually coordinate a good counter offensive against overwhelming odds. The best you can do is fall back to a better defended facility and hope to do a good push from there, or fall all the way back to your warp gate and get armor with a good blend of weapon types.
