Oh it will sell, but onyl on the consoles.  Ded servers are not needed for console versions so every kid with a ps3 or xbox360 will beg their parents to buy it for them.  I for one will be giving IW the single finger salute and raising my skull and crossbones flag.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

in my opinion the PC sales for this game will flop big time. Just from listening to people on here & some i know who play in leagues, alot of people are not buying. & for 60 bucks....forget it

What I am concerned about here is that a boycott will lead to Activision going "Screw PC's they don't buy our stuff, console ONLY for now on".  I dont really care about them as much as if all the other developer/studios take their lead.  Outside of Modern Warfare I could care less about any other game they crap out.  And if they want to keep churning out sequels its only a matter of time before they release a BF2142 that will kill the franchise.

I for one will be giving IW the single finger salute

Just reminded me.. that used the be the FITES salute. Why the hell don't we do that anymore? 150 people giving the camera the finger would be neat to see again.

Certainly the best response to this whole fiasco that I've heard thus far. In the words of Penny Arcade:

Quote
I've read so many posts of such a batCrap, bugFudge nature about this Modern Warfare Server Thing that it's hard to know where to begin. If you are angry at this break from tradition, and if you feel betrayed by these eleventh hour revelations, these are both situated well within the reasonable and comport (by and large) to the known.  Do not buy it.  Your platform of choice is the most open, universal digital venue on the planet.  A suitor will be along presently.

It's not cherry-picking to say that the notion of Microsoft somehow being involved runs deep. You could be charitable and say they mean Infinity Ward was infected somehow by Microsoft's peer to peer vision, but that's not what they're saying. They're talking about literal collusion to bring about the downfall of the PC. Even though Modern Warfare 2 is launching on Steam, leverages Steamworks, and grants Steam Achievements.

Some of the rage is channeled semi-constructively into (not a boycott, per se, but) a redirection of funds from Modern Warfare 2 over to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - a notion that has been cannily seized by the would-be recipient.  Bad Company 2 is going to be pretty good, so why not buy it - but let's pause for a moment and really absorb the idea that PC gamers are rallying around a DICE console port in their zeal. Nevermind the fact that you can't host your own Bad Company servers, and that having a dedicated server for the game involves renting it from one of their partners. Maybe they didn't read the FAQ?

As to why they want to create their own matchmaking network in the first place, the ability to make money selling maps is floated as a reason, and it makes a lot of sense - presumably they would rather make a million dollars than zero. A centralized defense against piracy is also suggested, and things tend to go downhill quick after this. It is not a mischaracterization to say that conversations with the hardcore PC community about software theft follow these tenets:

- There is no piracy.
- To the extent that piracy exists, which it doesn't, it's your fault.
- If you try to protect your game, we'll steal it as a matter of principle.

It's like, who wouldn't want to bend over backward in their service? You need to know it, because nobody else is going to tell you: you guys sound like Goddamned subway vagrants. Of course when you speak exclusively to each other, it all sounds so reasonable. It'll be reasonable when you all board the bus, and the songs you sing en route to excoriate your enemies will be forceful, but within reason; and when you douse yourself with gasoline and immolate yourself in front of the offices of Infinity Ward, one assumes this will be reasonable also.

New news todays from Kotaku. An even bigger blow to MW2.

http://kotaku.com/5397149/modern-warfare-2-pc-multiplayer-capped-at-9v9

I wanted to buy this game. I played single player for MW and thought that while it looked fine, it felt terribly..... scripted. After trying the multiplayer a bit at the last F150, I saw where the bulk of the development went. It impressed me enough to want to get the next game that came out as any MW2 would only be an improvement, right? I'd deal with the cost, simple because I'd be a newcomer to the series, effectively. This, however, is just unacceptable in my opinion. Killing off support for large-scale battles with large teams/clans?

As Henry Rollins and William Shatner once said, "I can't get behind that!"

I mean, I can understand them wanting to have people do small team battle and from time to time, that's pretty cool. You and your team have to use tactics instead of overwhelming force and I can dig that from time to time. Just..... to say users HAVE to do it is just wrong. My money is with BC2 this time. I enjoyed BC on the xbox and after seeing the video on youtube (helicopters again! WOO!) and Dice's response to the dedicated servers announcement, this 9v9 thing is just all but the last nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.

I guess that's why the move to take out dedicated servers. They didn't want to drop both bombs at once, or they would have had an even bigger outcry initially.

You know, its their game, they can dell all th eDLC they want.  My issues it that they crippled an established market place of modders and map makers.  They have no need to compete in terms of quality with anyone else. I imagine we will be getting absolute crap for DLC in the near future judging by the sloppy console port and the ripoff of MW1's corporate sponsored map building contest entries.

From the looks of it, the supposed pay-to-play business model isn't just for the PC side of things, but for the console as well. I wonder how the console people will take it, as they'd have to pay for xbl along side of that.

Console players are 13 year old entitled Crapheads, its not them but mommy or daddy who will get fed up with it as they are paying the bills.

I don't think that will EVER fly with console gamers (especially 360 gamers).  The only games that could ever charge for a pay to play service like that are MMORPG's and I still think they should not charge for console play.

I agree. But the articles I've read on this topic today aren't specifying whether this is PC or console. They just say "the Call of Duty franchise".
