I know I don't post here often anymore..... hell, I was surprised I even remembered my password.... but I was on signing up for the Port Treverton LAN and figured I'd say something.... You guys try Red Orchestra yet?  (pay download via Steam, based off unreal engine)  Just the first 3d shooter i've been thoroughly impressed by in awhile.  Realism is through the roof.

heh i played Red Orchestra's 2nd alpha release waaaay back. was good besides the fact that there were only 2 weapons and they were very poorly textured. Haven't played it since then but i've heard alot of good stuff about it. I could be persuaded into playing it.

The bots in it are absolute crap... especially in vehicles, but aside from that, its a solid game.... you can tell the game was designed around multiplay, not single play.  If you like a solid game where teamwork is important, and realism is important, then I really recommend giving it a whirl.  Its definately going to eat up more of my time once finals week is over(probably a bit before then too as a stress reliever).

The fact that the only "crosshairs" are your iron sights, and that you've got scope drift pretty much all the time unless you're weapon is braced against an object in the world, has really imporved my 3d shooter aiming skills, and shooting on the fly... I played BF2 briefly again the other night and was surprised how much easier it was to shoot.  Was like rideing a bike for a year and then comeing back to a bike with training wheels again.

Also, theres alot more than 2 weapons now.  Its definately got a final build feel.  Some solid maps, and always a few full servers... although be careful, some maps show full, even though its just full of bots.

Anyway thats my 2 cents on it....

it was originally a mod for UT2004... last downloadable version was 3.3(link). They went commercial with it and called it Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45(purchasable through Steam). It's a slightly more polished version of the game, or so I'm told.

My opinion steam needs to stop making mods of the game. Now if people make mods of the game that is cool by me. They really need to focus on Episode 1.

I guess they got a comerical license of the UT engine, and are selling it as a standalone

I remember playing it free as well, quite cool

It's not the same dev team... Since they made a deal with the Devil (err EA) it seems that they are just using steam as a delivery platform.  If you look at what you can buy with steam it has been an explosion of games.  Personaly, I am not sure if I like it. What happens when they abbandon Steam down the road.. Will all our games be sent into oblivion as well?

EA may be the devil... but they've got some awesome games... consider my soul sold for bf 2142 to be enjoyable.
