I have been having an on going argument with my friend. Initially it comes down to this. He says u can not compare the 8800 series to the 7800 series mainly because it is 2 completly different cards. He says it's like comparing a PS2 to a PS3, the PS3 is running a different hardware.
This is my aspect to the agument. I believe u can compare the two cards because when u are compairing them, they are indeed running simular to a sense. Now the MAIN ARGUMENT saying you can't compare the two is that the 8800 is running DX10 vs a 7 series running DX9. He also says that you can't compare the two because one is running 256bit and the other is running 320 (i'm talking about the gts version not the gtx)
Now, I compare the two from a consumer standpoint. Which one is giving more performance. From what I understand, the 8800 does not use the capibilities of DX10 running in DX9 (the whole way the card renders and such which is different from the other cards..but in DX9 apps, it renders the exact same)
My view is this, since it renders the same as a DX9 card, then it can be compared to one. Its major differences besides that is most the same differences with the cards before (like the 6 vs the 7 series). Core clock being higher, memory being faster and a different chip set. The major difference between the 7 and the 8 besides the DX10 factor is the fact the 8800 is running in 320 bit vs the 7 series running in 256. However, if this is true, then u can't possibly compare the 7 series to the 6, because 6 series cards ran 128 bit vs the 7 in 256 (despite the 6800 running 256..but u get my point i think)
Anyways, what is everyones thought on this. He says it's like comparing Porsche to a Civic, the Porsche is in a different class. I say if both are running DX9, then they are in the same class....difference being better chipset, core and mem clocks. (just like any series before that)
A card running DX10 can't be compared with one in DX9, but if both are running DX9, then the mere fact that the card is capible of running DX10 doesn't remove it from being a DX9 card. If they both run the same, the both can be compared. So what's your input on the matter to help settle the argument...
Thanks
