Title: Microsft tries again......Epic fail??
Post by: -Sp()()ge- on January 08, 2009, 08:32:23 AM
Microsoft is abandoning efforts to fix Vista and to launch "BEST Windows OS yet".  Sounds like a Ripley's Believe it or not.

Aren't they basically admitting with saying that, that Vista was a failure and they are trying to replace it as soon as possible?  XP came out in 2001 and it is still the OS of choice for a lot of people.   Hopefully Windows 7 will go back to the idea of XP and be a stable, solid OS that will stick around for 7 or 8 years again.

Think back a few years... Windows 98/2000 were decent OSes then came along this AWESOME new OS Windows ME, when it turned out to be a pile of Crap what did they do?  Oh ya that's right, nothing.  They would much rather spend all the money they are making on advertising, rather than fixing the Crap product that they are advertising.  The real fix comes in when they get you to buy another OS to fix the Crap one they sold you in the first place.

Rinse, repeat.  I have learned to expect nothing less from the big guys.

I never remember Windows ME being billed as the next great OS.  I remember it just being a hyped up service pack for 98 that even bill gates said was a mistake.  Windows 2000 was a great OS because it was the start of the NT based OS's for the non domain systems.  It just took forever to boot.

I bought Windows 3.1 back in the day. Win95, 98, ME (yes I had a comp with it), XP, Vista, 7, all this.. just updates. We should get them for free as updates. :)

Where were you when they were touting it as the next greatest thing for a media PC?

I think you are thinking MCE.  ME was the Windows 98 upgrade that had system restore and windows movies maker.  It wasn't designed for a media PC.  It was a desktop OS.  Only offered for a year.

That's a big 10-4 negative good buddy.

Windows ME gave you video editing software through Windows updates (I used it to make quite a few videos back in the day) along with their other media options.  I believe it was called Windows Movie Maker (as you mentioned) when it first came out.

Microsoft was all about the additional media accessories that were included with ME (just another marketing move), when in reality they included only a few generic apps with the default installs.

I am well aware of the differences between ME and MCE, as I was considering it (MCE) when I was building my HTPC, but thanks for the refresher.

for those of you that want to actually try it out... quickly go here:

worked great for me... i got both 32 and 64bit iso images and both 32/64 product keys.

MS has said the first 2.5 million users will get keys, then they are done.

Hey thanks for the tip!  Got both my keys and am DL'ing the 32bit iso right now.

I dunno what the deal is with that site, but when I am DL'ing the ISO's they just stop randomly, never finishing.  Is there anywhere else I can get these ISO's, other than bit torrent - I want an official ISO not something that someone could have messed with.

No problem...

Also, pay close attention to the bottom of the neowin site regarding the MP3 corruption bug in Windows 7.  It will corrupt all your mp3s if you don't patch it first.

And Google answers me in less than 5 min.

I would like to also note... I didn't realize Vista could resize partitions.

It can only re-size partitions to a certain degree. I think as much as 4gb; can't really remember.

I have both the 32b and 64b iso's and keys.  Not sure if I am gonna try it as I want to try it on a machine that I don't care about.  And that isn't gonna happen until after the 150 as well.

I tried Windows 7 6801 build. I have yet to try 7000; my first initial thoughts of it were positive. Is there any new features in the 7000 build? Or is just more rounded? (i.e. more stable, less hardware issues)

It's Vista... with a new taskbar and lots of tweaks.  Thus the .1 bump in version number rather than a major revision.  The new taskbar annoys me because of how it is difficult to tell which apps are running and which aren't.  The little borders around running apps simply aren't enough when just glancing.  I actually would almost prefer a similar little X on on the button somewhere to allow you to close it with a single click... the X's presence would also indicate the app is running and not currently just a shortcut.

Otherwise, just browing around, it's the same as Vista.  The network Control Panel is just as horrible as it is in Vista.  And except for minor performance tweaks, it is still as slow as Vista.

If they don't provide a free update to Vista Ultimate customers, i will be seriously disappointed.

from the benchmarks floating around it's actually faster then Visata in a lot of apps and even rivals XP in a few.

"Regardless of how you slice the numbers, Windows 7 and Vista remain birds of a feather and clearly a very different species of animal from Windows XP. You can see this divergence in the overall execution path complexity for Windows 7. Like Vista, this new Windows chews up a lot more CPU cycles per transaction loop than XP -- from 39 to 68 percent more on dual-core and from 19 to 51 percent more on quad-core (the lower figures in each case representing the workflow workload, and the higher figures the database workload). Any illusions about Windows 7 somehow being leaner or more efficient than Vista can now be thrown out the window, right along with the infamous "new kernel" myth and related rumors and misconceptions."
