Major PC Powers to Form Gaming Alliance at GDC 2008

good article.  And as for Epic to switch over to console as a priority.  Well maybe if UT3 was more then a graphical update to UT2004 they would've sold more.

Make some cross platform games like counterstrike and tfc without all the aids for console users and see who comes out on top.  IMHO the PC is not in danger until a console formally supports mouse/kb gaming.  I enjoy my xbox 360 and WII a lot, but one of my favorite genres, fps, is just so clunky with a control pad and the aim assists they build in feel like cheating.  Though I will give props to nintendo, metroid3 prime corruption is probably the best implemented and most intuitive console fps I have ever played.

I heard there is a keyboard mouse for the ps3 and im not sure for the 360.  But even the best games for those systems are very linear and don't allow much roaming in the maps. eg. Gears o war, resistance, halo.

Personally, I love the PC and I own an original xbox and the Wii but i don't play them much.  I can't imagine playing cod4 at a lan with xbox360's.

I just hope epics move to the consoles isn't going to coax other developers to do the same.  Screw that Mark Rein guy...  I used to respect that company.  I bet Tim Sweeney is disheartened by this decision.

Nothing beats the PC platform.  I don't care how advanced consoles get, the PC will always be a few steps ahead of the curve.  I love console gaming (I had COD4 for the 360 before the PC) but nothing can replace the mouse and KB.  Even if these consoles get a WASD and mouse setup, it just won't be the same unless youset it up just like a PC (you in a chair with the monitor 2 feet away).

Yeah! We need to ruin our eyes as we get so far into the game we practically put our faces right through the monitor! Console games are all... "Go sit in a chair and hold this controller like 10 feet away while your friends laugh at how awful you're doing.."

And maybe because people just share the games they get *cough* the retail sales doesn't really show much at all!

I can't wait until I can get cybernetic implants in my eyes and brain so I wouldn't need any mere computer and monitor....ala Shadowrun!

There is a 3rd party peripheral for the 360 that allows use of a kb and mouse, but it can be a pain to set up and you can't use wireless.

And inccidentally, until that neural shunt gets more affordable I remember watching a tv show a while back that showed a mouse peripheral for quadrapalegics that actually tracks your eye movements and moves the cursor on the screen based on where you look.  Imagine you see an enemy in counterstrike and it's targeted instantly, pretty cool.

In an effort to keep PC Gaming alive and kicking a number of big names from Microsoft to Intel have joined hands to advance PC gaming. This offically annouces the PCGA at this years GDC.

Quote
"PCGA members believe that we are stronger and more effective together than any member company is alone, and that our shared vision and group effort will improve PC gaming worldwide," said Intel's Randy Stude. "Industry forums have proven to foster competition and innovation among member companies and grow markets while improving user experiences."

"What we intend to do is look at what's out there and tell developers what consumers have and understand what audiences exist," added Microsoft Games for Windows chief Kevin Unagast. "The role of the PCGA is providing guidance to developers when they are making a game, explain how they can achieve consistency."

The list of PCGA members includes Acer/Gateway, Activision, AMD, Dell/Alienware, Epic Games, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia and Razer.

So I guess that leaves Epic out from going all console.

All the software developers have to do is use Valve's steam engine and Piracy will be reduced significantly.  Don't get me wrong I priated a lot of software when i was younger(Broke).  But I buy all my progs now, except maybe an OS or 2.  I would hate to see PC gaming dissapear.  I guess we could just have FITES reunions at Tokyo dinner every couple of months.

We'd sit around and play "old school computer games" like CoD4 and StarCraft II...
