Switch to ..uh..whatever the hell you want.
I've been brought up on Windows. From my family's first computer in 1993, A Tandy Sensation 386sx 33mhz 4megs ram system running DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1
I've become dependant on self installing programs, graphical everything, and rebooting constantly. Earlier last year I aquired an old cruddy Pentium II and decided to play with Linux. After trying NUMEROUS distrobutions I settled on Ubuntu. Why? They make it SO easy for a Windows Dependant user like myself to dive right in. Installation is step by step. Very well explained. Just as easy as installing WinXP in my opinion.
And with desktop managers like Gnome and KDE, the desktop feel is more customizable and smoother than XP.
There are some down sides though, wireless networking is SO FREAKIN HARD if you dont have the exact right card/adapter. I did manage to get my WUSB11 Linksys adapter to work but I had to really hunt around for it. - You cant (normally) double click on something to install it. But its rather simple anyways.
Good stuff? Runs faster than winXP usually, dont have to reboot every 10 seconds. Hell, I havent rebooted my linux webserver in my garage for (gets the math..) 22 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes, 33 seconds but i had it well over 3 months once before I shut it down to install some more RAM.
I urge people to play with Linux. Not because of some soapbox speech that windows is evil..but because it is a FREE activity that will expand your knowledge.
Im not anti Microsoft. I do dual boot to XP for gaming reasons.
