Laptop or Netbook?
« on: June 23, 2009, 09:31:56 AM »
So my laptop is getting very flaky lately, and I am thinking of getting a new one.  I can't decide between a netbook: Link
and a gaming laptop: Link

Anyone have some pros and cons they can throw at me to help me decide?

Yes, have some!   :deal2:
Remember if you don't even consider buying a macTop, you give up on being cool.   :lamer:
And don't forget you're not just buying a macTop, you'er buying the ability to say you bought a macTop.
You might be wondering :wtf: It's simple really, if you don't have a macTop you can't say you have a macTop.

AND if you're worring about whispering behind your back :secret: and people calling you a mac fan boy just remember these words of wisdom:

Macs are not cool.  As a matter of fact, buying a mac says you are not cool due to the fact that you are paying way too much for hardware that is only available from apple and is not as powerful as PC hardware, which you do not have to buy from one manufacturer.  And pretty much the stereotype that art programs and music programs or whatever are better on the mac...has been thrown out the window years ago.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

I want to buy a macbook pro badly. For my graphic work, they are great. The big thing that macs have over pc's is the continuity of interface. Unfortunately, Decepticon, that "stereotype" you speak of is actually true. Although I CAN produce the same results on my windows PC, There is substantially less issues with the Mac version of the adobe suite. The whole workflow experience is undoubtedly smoother and less headache inducing. With the macs, there are less issues caused by the various permutations of hardware configs, given the fact that the hardware configs in macs are much more standardized.

I still like Windows better than macs, but I would give up my graphics work on the pc in a heartbeat if I ever got a macbook.

I feel the same as Agent in relation to games.  With the exception of blizzard not too many Game Dev's care about the mac platform.

A mac is not even an option.  It is hard enough trying to integrate a Linux system into my network (just not geeky enough for Linux).  So how about I get some advice about whether I get a netbook or laptop?

It's simple really. You are debating a netbook (a low-powered system suitable for web/e-mail/IM/basic productivity) or a gaming laptop (powerful system that will run anything you want it to). This debate is not about the merits of one over the other as it is you need to answer the question of "What do I want to do with it?". If you can't answer that question, you can't even begin to discuss which system to get.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Macs are REALLY easy to bring into a Windows network... A Linux server and desktop aren't too bad either... Maybe you need to bump up those skill points to get the Network Engineer Bonus.

You can also do a dual boot or a http://www.parallels.com/ install.

Also from a business standpoint Macs have more value. They depreciate slower and have a total lower cost of ownership... my PowerBook is still kicking and it's from 2003...

Pretty much sums it up to be honest. Are you looking for something lightweight portable u can carry around to coffee shops and search the interwebs with or something you can go take on the go to a LAN and fire up CoD4? That in a nutshell answers your question

And undoubtedly mac owns the graphical market (ie does that make sense?) so if I had to deal with after effects, photoshop, premier etc etc, i'd be buying a MAC first as well.

Most of the use of my system has been watching movies when I am not in the living room, using it for TeamSpeak on the weekend gaming sessions.  I have wanted to get Frets on Fire working on it to use as a portable GH system.  That didn't work too well.  Gaming while I am away from the house would be nice as well.  I think I just answered my own question.

Side note.  Is getting a 2.53 Ghz CPU (Intel Core 2 duo) vs. a 2.0 Ghz worth $250?  Am I gonna have wanted the faster proc?

Regarding netbook vs notebook:  <what sully said>

I'd just toss out there the HP Touchsmart tx2z.  It's a convertible tablet (screen swivels around to be purely a laptop or purely a slate tablet) with a multi-touch touch screen (ready for Win7 touchy goodness).

Specs:  AMD Turion dual core, up to 8gb memory, up to 320GB 7200rpm hd, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics w/ 64mb mem, 12.1" screen, built-in dvd burner, webcam, N-wifi, bluetooth, etc.

I've been toying with the idea of picking up one for myself to play with win7 and *nix.  It won't play crysis, but it would be a fun laptop with a very small price.  Iit is right smack dab in the middle, pricewise, of a gaming laptop and netbook prices ($1500 vs $250).

Like i said, just thought i'd toss an idea out there.

Regarding going from 2.0 to 2.5Ghz.  When i overclocked my 2.4Ghz Q6600 to 3.0Ghz, i *did* notice the difference in the peppy-ness of the system though i don't have any actual deltas in fps to give you.  To get pretty close... i checked out this site for benchmarks (http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/14573/5) they say the difference between a 2.6Ghz and a 3.0Ghz Core 2 Duo are:
Bioshock (+300Mhz gets you +2fps)
Supreme Commander (+300Mhz gets you +2fps)
Team Fortress 2 (+300Mhz gets you +15fps)
LAME Audio Encoding (+300Mhz gets you 3 seconds faster)

You can review the benchmarks yourself to get an idea.  Mostly up to you if you think it's worh the delta in price.
