Title: LAN Question
Post by: VinACE85 on February 11, 2010, 11:11:21 PM
Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought I remembered Comcast being at the LAN last year and providing (50? Mbit) access, is that right?

If so, are they coming again? This is really just a curiosity thing, not like I spent a lot of time on an outside connection while at the LAN. But I thought I remembered a fairly excellent connection last year.

IIRC yes it was 2 50Mb docsys modems.  Nice speedy connection.  Actually after that LAN I contacted the comcast rep that was there and dropped my DSL in favor of some nice 16Mb down/6Mb up cable internet.

It was definitely a sweet connection. Almost felt odd not getting choked out, especially with so many people.

Good to know as almost all of my games are steam based.

Steam games with lan play functions will still work offline.

We started the LAN last year with 2 50mb connections that were load balanced, but the NIC I was using for the second connection kept crapping out on me, so I pulled that out of the mix late Friday night, so we truly only used 1 50mb connection last year for most of the time. This year I didn't have time to really test a load balanced setup, so we'll just be going with the single 50mb connection again this time.

which is funny because I STILL had to get a few of my steam games AND I bought one (either left 4 dead or lost planet was on special at that particular time) and all the downloads were lightning fast.

Have fun waiting for that... Its limited distro and you need to vote for your city w/ a written reason on why they should be there...

In the mean time Ill enjoy the 100Mbps-ness that Sully brings to the table.

So, I just picked up the modem for the LAN this weekend....

What do you say to that, broccoli?

Apparently the Geolocation for the IP is way off because it thinks I'm in Kansas, so you can ignore that 1200 mile part.

That's freaking sweet, is what that is.  That also seems to qualify for a, "We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto."

Could the timing be any worse on the date the demo stops & the game is released? Why would they stop the demo a week before the game is released?

Wings of Prey just went on sale for the week/end regular 49.99 now only 24.99

I enjoyed the trial version and I am a sucker for WW2 fighter sims so i bought it. Takes some monkeying around to get the stick setup right but after that its smooth sailing.

Yeah I bought that too. But it only allows for 3 installs and now way to get your key back like GTA4. I would be up to play some of that. Why in the hell they decided to go from 10 installs to 3 is beyond me.

The reason they gave for stopping it was so that EA had time to prep the servers for launch.

The servers will still buckle under the pressure, just watch. :-D
